TDV8 broken down today- Major Oil Leak- Possible Turbo?

Hi Guys,

Girlfriend took the car upto Stirling today for meeting and on the return journey to Edinburgh while sitting at 65mph on the M9 she accelerated to pass a car.

A load of smoke appeared behind her and car cut into limp mode and she pulled off the Motorway and switched it off. Tried starting the car again but wouldn't start or even turn over. There was no noises or bangs so hopefully no blown turbo/engine!

Got the Greenfly to return it to my yard where we can see a load of oil that leaked out on the right hand side around the suspension and alloy wheel and all the way down the underside of the car.

Andy @ Whites that I use can't even look at it for a week and we will make a start tomorrow stripping covers off but just wondering if this has happened to anyone?

Oh its a 2006 TDV8 with remap - FSH and well looked after with 160K.

My main worry is a possible oil feed to Turbo has burst?

Thanks in advance

Perhaps silly question but are there any faults logged? You'd hope so, if there are then it might help narrow down what happened.

I seem to remember that it has codes for turbo over speed etc. Ed

No not a silly question and garage next door to me will do a diagnostic check tomorrow as she won't turn over now so best to see what's happening, however his diagnostics equipment may not pick everything up.

Yeah Mikey I think I may have to wait next week to get her booked in with Andy!

Cars has never put a foot wrong, maybe I've done a little too much towing with her!

I take it you mean 160,000 miles. If so watching with interest as mine has similar.

Depending on how much oil, it could be a blown hose between the turbo & intercooler or between crank case ventilation pipe and turbo which is on the driver side.

Here's a pic of the hose turbo to intercooler if you want to look.

Hoping for the best of luck for you bud, mine did similar trick just into new year, approx 3.5k in parts another 2k in labour, ended up with 2 turbos, 2 EGR valves, inter cooler, power steering cooler, thermostat housing plus assorted gaskets, not the best start to new year. Had it back 6 odd weeks, front screen cracked, finding it hard to feel the love at the moment Rolling Eyes

I'm afraid it worse than that....engine failure!

Stripped it down to try turn the crank to see if Engine was seized and even though it turns it eventually locks! Gutted!

Now the search for someone who does a good job as usual specialist can't do it! Sad

Jenks,

PM me I am currently in discussion with LR on 3.6 engine failures, I have 3 here all terminal and a selection of dead engines, there is no easy or cheap way currently to get these motors back on the road when they do fail and as far as i can see there are reasonable numbers failing.

Sorry to hear your pain.

Oh dear, sorry to hear your news. Any reason given as to what caused it?

It's not reassuring to hear this type of thing especially when wanting to travel in remote locations.

I don't understand why they spontaneously fail, is it bearing or oil pump related like the 3.0lt tdv6? It's the same family of motor, different factory. ______________________________

STOP!!! Are you sure its NOT just hydrolocked on its own oil sir??? Rolling Eyes

We have had several that have! Will drain over a week or so back past the rings and allow the engine to turn over once again... Worth checking first sir Thumbs Up

Craig
How does the oil get in the pot? Does it bypass the turbo seal, then in through the intercooler and manifold?
Thanks ______________________________
