Range rover TD6 Auto Box issues

Morning Guys, im new to the site, and klove reading all about the problems everyone is having,
i have a range rover td6 , Auto 2004

It will go into 1,2, & 3, some times 4 , and on the dash it will say its in 5th but i know it isnt, it feels like its stuck in 3rd gear, can any one help with my issue and point me in the right direction of what the issue is, my hart tells me its the transmission Control box, rather than the gearbox itself but i might be wrong

i can get it in high and low box no problem, if its in low it feels like its stuck in a gear and wont realeas.

any help and advice will be appreciated.

Could be that the direct clutch shaft has failed

Update

i have just put the Range Rover on the test book to see what the issues are and the fault codes,

the garage was unable to find any faults on his fault finder, he said it dos not look good,

he recons because his unable to find any faults on his tester , he recons there might be something wrong with the ecu, any one had the same issues

we took it for a drive until fail safe came up on dash to find it still wouldn't find the fault

United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Adriatic Blue

Good morning guys I’m still looking for some advice

The gearbox garage has just called arranging for the Range Rover l322 diesel 2004 to go in to have the gearbox done
They have now told me that the pump in the box rubs against the bell housing coursing it to fail, hence not changing up from 3rd to 4th & 5th
I have never herd of such a fault in all the 30 years of having Range rovers
I have scoured high and low through a lot of forums and still haven’t come across this scenario

I’m starting to loose faith in the garage after them promising to get back to me and never do then I have to chase them

They put it on the test book and no faults was found
Surely , correct me if I’m wrong , if it throws a fault up on the dash as transmissions fail safe comes up
Then should this be logged in the memory and come up as a fault when on the test book when plugged in
I know if been told that when you turn the ignition of then back on it clears the fault
Dose this also clear the memory to the ecu as well

Can someone advice please

Well the good news is you're not totally mad.. yet... Shocked

I would agree that if there is a fault on the screen of doom in the car saying Trans Failsafe Mode, there will be a log in the ECU memory.... I suspect that the "garage" isn't using LR testbook or a dedicated LR diagnostic unit, and therefore is only talking OBD2 which the Range Rover doesn't do very well, especially in TD6 form, where it talks a totally different language to most diagnostic units.

As far as the gearbox issues go, what they are saying isn't beyond the scope of things.... the pump is driven by the input shaft in the bellhousing, and low pressure will cause all sorts of issues..

Be aware that you need a special dyno to setup the GM5L40E gearbox and there are only a few transmission specialists that have the equipment to do the job properly.... Also you really need a specialist that has the full Sonex valve jigs for the gearbox, as this kit costs thousands of pounds and is only found in a handful of Transmission places. If the gearbox has issues it will need valve seats replacing in the valve body, and the Sonex system is only way to properly do it.

I'm sure that there will be somewhere in your neck of the woods that will do a proper job, the hard thing is finding them... I'm sure that someone one here will be able to recommend a place. Mackey's in Glasgow is one... but that is a wee bit too far to go, and slightly nearer is STA in Aylesbury (whom I have nothing but praise for !)

First thing to do is find a Transmission specialist that does the Sonex valve seat replacement for the GM5L40E gearbox, and you'll have found a place that can talk to the car in the same language too!! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
