HDD SatNav Updating

Have just read in an article on a forum that the Hard Drive based satnav systems that most makers are now fitting cannot be updated for the latest maps without removing the entire drive and replacing it with a new one, seems a bit severe to me when techs can do all the ECU updates just by plugging the car into a computer, why not the Satnav HDD as well? The item was related to a member of the US armed forces who transported his newish FFRR or RRS over to Europe and wanted to run the European Map database - LR wouldn't even sell him a new HDD as they claimed that the mapping systems are not compatible and there are only 3 HDD maps to cover the world - Europe, America and The Rest of the World - not very clever for a car that is supposed to be able to make continent straddling trips - what happens if you want to take your 2011MY car on a quick weekend trip to Cape Town from London....... 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

I'll find out when mine goes into the local dealer for it's first service in two weeks time. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

I have been asking my dealer for ages to upgrade my map on ther HDD, all to no avail. The barely believable tale is thet they are still awaiting the kit/date/ training/ passwords or whatever to do this job. I first asked in Nov 2010, and am still waiting now!
If anybody has an insight in to this I would be keen to know. Crying or Very sad

If (and this is a BIG if), the maps aren't able to be updated without replacing the whole HDD, that would be the most ridiculous thing I've heard in years! In my line of business I do code and f/w updates regularly on all sorts of different hardware and NONE of them ever include replacing the entire drive with a new one! Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

maps are updated every few years by navteq...the 2011 map has just come out on disc so possibly the hard drive version might take a bit longer as its a different format..

Just a different process to achieve the same result Stan. Rocket science it's not. I guess because it takes a bit more technical know how than hitting the eject button on the nav DVD drive these places are scared of it! Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I'd be surprised if that was the case Stan. Most systems are only deployed once the support method has been put in place. It would seem highly irregular if that wasn't the case here.......... Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

but surely discs will come through the post to dealer and the hdd upgrade will be a download from navteq? and if LR havnt got this download then they cant upload to the hdd of the range..

I would imagine that any manufacturer who use the Navteq (or any other HDD based system) would have a support system in place whereby they would connect to the nav supplier to download the updated s/w (inc maps) in the correct format for uploading to the car, and then have some s/w locally which would allow them to connect to the nav system in the car to do the update to the HDD installed in the car. This might even be integrated into IDS or whatever systen they use for other electronics in the car, but at least have a standalone system to do the same thing.
If they don't, it's a glaring ommision in their service strategy! And perhaps that shouldn't come as a surprise if it hasn't been done! Whistle Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

i presume that most systems are similar in a round about kind of way. the media centre fitted in my Touareg had a 20gb HDD fitted in it which would store music, and the maps were held outwith this 20gb.

i did four map updates in the three years i had it and three firmware updates all by inserting the relevant disc in the dvd slot on the front of it and letting it work it's magic.

i can't see any HDD having to be removed to upgrade maps or anything else for that matter. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

according to the d3 forum, the hdd is updated via firewire cable and the process does take a long while..
