Advice, driving with failed alternator

The other day I started the Range Rover and after driving a very short distance “charging system fault” was shown in the dash. I turned around and drove the car back home. On reading the faults it showed P0625-11 (6C). Which relates to the alternator circuit short to ground.

I have an extended warranty with Land Rover and I rang them to book it in for them to check and hopefully replace the said item. Now, I have to get the car to the dealer, it’s 15 miles away. It’s only just had a new battery fitted at the dealer under a month ago.
1, will there be enough charge in the battery to drive 15 miles (motorway)?
2, would driving it cause anymore electrical damage to the car (canbus or other ecu’s)?
3, would driving it without charging the battery cause damage to battery?

Or would you arrange a full lift just in case?

Ta Thumbs Up

I would have it delivered there, but, if it was a diesel I would fully charge the battery turn as much off as I could and drive as a last resort. Wouldn't attempt it with a petrol though.

When my alternator failed I managed about 20 miles home after getting the warning on starting when leaving a lunch stop. At home the car showed 11V and then coughed and stopped, after about 5 minutes. Driving home did not give rise to any further electrical gremlins. So no guarantee that you would make it and a lift would be the best way.

The garage doing my repairs picked the car up on a trailer from home, and I would expect that the dealer responsible for your warranty would do the same. If you're in the AA/RAC or other then they may relay you, if not demand the cost back from the warranty provider. Cheers

If you have a fully charged battery before you set off I don't see why you should have any problems doing 15 miles.
Just don't do it in the dark or when it's raining and switch everything off.
I've done a lot more than 15 miles with a failed alternator albeit not in a RR.
I'd also be inclined to disconnect the alternator before setting off just to be absolutely sure there is no partial earthing of the battery.
Nothing will happen to the car, the worst is a bong of doom telling you you have a low voltage together with associated messages generated by low voltage.

My experience was that the alternator failed but my wife was unaware and drove it until it stopped.(probably about 15 miles!) The battery was ruined and the warranty only paid for the alternator as batteries are excluded even though the battery was destroyed as a result of the failure of the alternator.

Thinking back on my alternator failure, the battery did give up the ghost some months later. I wonder if it could have been related or just coincidental? (the battery was under 2 years old and was replaced by the dealer, as it was within the manufacturer's warranty, if it hadn't been it would have entailed a substantial outlay of beer tokens).

From our experience of about 15 miles it would indicate the OP needs to consider carefully his options on recovery to the repairer.

Perhaps get it lifted? Cheers

Cheers for replies Thumbs Up
It is on charge at the moment using ctek charger that charges AGM batteries.
I don’t want anything else to go pop. I am in the AA and do have Land Rover assist. Don’t want to be stranded on the side of motorway. I’ll see what the dealer says re driving and maybe other faults that could arise from driving it and maybe look at a full lift.
Thumbs Up
