Car detailing advice

Hi Guys,
Now the weather is getting better and there isn't as much crap on the road, i want to give the FFRR a real good clean. My better half got me a Kestral DA6 dual action polisher for xmas but i now need the pads and polish to go with it. WHat do i buy that is easy enough to use and not to technical. I've mainly used Megs stuff before and like the stuff but i've heard of Sonos, and 3M plus other's so a mine field. I've had a quick look at the megs site and there is loads of different polish's which one do i choose?
A lot of help would be great.
Cheers
Rob

Hi Rob,
Check out detailing world forum, but be warned the enthusiasm over there can be infectious.
I have "invested" well over three times the money I "saved" not having my car sealed by the dealer before collection.

There is also a thread on detailing on a budget, which covers kit that is also redily available from halfrauds as opposed to mail order from detailing supplies stores.
I have settled on using elite car care for ordering kit, Alex is friendly helpful and gives a discount to DW members.

So to answer your question directly - and this is taken from obsessively reading continuously over on DW Smile

If your car only has minor swirling, then autoglym super resin polish gets loads of praise, this can be used by hand, but also with a soft pad.
Chemical guys hex logic pads seem to get very high ratings for use with DA's
For more serious correction, I settled on a menzerna polish kit from elite. This has three bottles, that with a couple of pads ( light cut, and fine polish) should cover all eventuality within the available permutations.

Don't forget your waxes!

Personally I love Megs #16 Yellow - This gave a truly outstanding to my Oslo Blue RR.

Before polish, obviously go through a thorough wash routine, followed by full clay bar. This will remove all surface contaminants, so you do not inflict further damage when polishing if needed.

What is the condition of your paint generally? What colour is the paint?

You might get away with a good clean, clay, then an application of a glaze (to fill swirls) and a wax or sealant.
Then keep it spangly with a quick detailing product (megs ultimate quick detailer is my face at the moment, adds a little protection on top of wax or sealant also)

I am about to try out chem guys black light sealant and V7 finishing spray. Supposed to give super wet look, with easy application. Gerry

I take it you've read this one??

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic565.html

Getting to that time of year, looking forward to clay bar-ing and the three stage process again, might need new DA pads though as the puppy got hold of one of them Censored

Going to wait till I'm back from my trip to the Alps though. Got that and a mammoth UK journey to the very far north of Scotland for a fishing trip. 600 miles in the UK...awesome. What a car to do that trip in. Discovery 4 HSE

Thanks for the help guys. RRUK yer I've readying post and looks good. I've never used a DA polisher before so not sure what combo pad/polish to use? My RR is dark blue. Think it's Oslo or Buckingham can't remember at the moment. As for condition o the paint I would probably say it's pretty bad but not unstable. Once washed there are alot of swirls and have quite a few heavy scratch's. From what I've read these scratch's will need more work than most but they won't need paint work.
I'm pretty o'fay with the clay bay procedure and love feeling the difference but never been down the propper polishing machine route.

I've just had a poke around the www.detailingworld.co.uk and ONR seems to get excellent reviews, has anyone here tried it, if so is it suitable for black paintwork or should I stick to my trusty two buckets and a hose pipe?

Gaz, I have used Chipsaway - they are a franchise and certainly the local guy near me made such a good job of taking out a ding and repainting the area in a difficult colour (Giverny Green) that when the car was taken into a dealer their sales guys could not see the repair.................. I'm not saying that all their franchises are the same as out local guy but worth giving them a try, and it cost me £60 for a deep ding through to the metal to be filled, sanded off, primed and painted, all on a snowy March day (he brought his own "tent" workshop and set it up on my drive with his own generator to power all his lamps and driers and sprayers. Was very impressed. They also do invisible repairs to seat covers and fabric hoods on convertible cars. There is another franchise called Dentmaster, but I've no experience of them 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

I've been detailing for a number of years, it does take a bit of practise. If you can get hold of an old bonnet from a scrapyard to practise on it will give you a bit more confidence when you are working on your own car.

I love reflection shots, here are a few I've done

Awesome; you 'clearly' (LOL) know your way around high quality paint correction.

I've got the DAS6-pro from clean your car- detailing world forum is great but I've spent hundreds! from ironX, Tardis, foL lance, shampoos polishes (menzerna w/ sonus pads) detailing brushes, britegel, FK1000p etc etc etc etc lol it's a disease!!!!

Good luck though very satisfying!
