Handbrake adjustment- How To

Here is the excerpt from the L322 Workshop Manual

Adjust
1. Raise rear of vehicle.
WARNING: Do not work on or under a
vehicle supported only by a jack. Always
support the vehicle on safety stands.
2. Remove rear road wheels.
3. On each rear brake:
4. Remove adjuster access plug from brake disc.
5. Rotate brake disc until access hole is in the 6
o'clock position.
6. Using a screwdriver or similar tool, turn brake
shoe adjuster until resistance is felt. Apply
handbrake several times to centre shoes, re-adjust
if required and repeat.
7. Ensure handbrake is released and check disc
will not rotate.
8. Back the adjuster off 8 notches, check disc is
free to rotate.
9. Fit adjuster access plug.
10. Fit rear road wheels and tighten nuts to 140 Nm
(103 lbf.ft).
11. Handbrake lever assembly is self adjusting and
will correctly tension cables. However after
adjustment apply handbrake several times,
release handbrake and ensure road wheels are
free to rotate.
12. Lower vehicle.

I'm guessing there is something else wrong with mine - I have done this procedure exactly as stated with no luck, the handbrake is and always has been crap. The handbrake lever also seems to come up very high.

Do the inside of the handbrake glaze up over time reducing their performance? Thinking I may have to pull mine apart for a closer look.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers - Gav

No they weren't glazed up on mine when I took the discs off to replace them. Lots of dust and muck inside though. The "cog" seems to catch on the lower spring preventing it from turning.

When you take it all apart (disc off etc) the cog turning should make the adjuster screw out, thus reducing the gap between shoe and disc. .

Yes the brake drum and shoes glaze up. Thumbs Up
My handbrake was next to useless.
Took the drums off and found the drum and shoe surfaces had a hard layer of glazed dirt on them.
Emery papered the drum surfaces back to as new, same with the shoe surfaces.
Checked that the adjusters were free and lightly lubricated and put the whole lot back together after roughly adjusting the shoes.
Finely adjusted the shoes and now the handbrake is really effective.
Well worth the effort.
This on a car that had a full Main Dealer Service History.

Thanks for that - mine has a full dealer service history too - mustn't be part of their checks...

I'll whip the brakes apart when I get a chance - just started an engine upgrade on my Classic Rangie, so it won't be for a few weeks at least...

If you want a comprehensive manual on these braking systems go over to Disco3 and search for "Bodsy's Brake Bible".

Very D3 orientated but these things are so similar that it doesn't matter. The thing is well worth downloading and printing off.

Mine needs taking up a bit. Which way do you have to move the cog ? Push it upwards till it stops ?

Can you do this 1 wheel at a time ? - I'm guessing not.

Don't have 2 jacks or axle stands.........

When I did mine I had both wheels off the ground.
To adjust, one cog has to turn clockwise and one has to turn anti-clockwise.
Unfortunately I can't remember which is which. Smile

Cheers.

Thinking about it, I suppose if it stops turning and the wheel still moves, you have to turn all the way bck the other way.

Seen what may be a nice set of 3 ton axle stands on the bay for less than £20 delivered.

May be worth a punt......

Its not like I can't wait a week for the stands if needs be.........

OK...Obtained axle stands earlier this week and have attempted, and aborted, adjusting the handbrake.

First off, where are you supposed to support the RR with axle stands ? The instructions with the stands say the car needs to sit "in the cup". There is nowhere that I can see to have them support it properly ;

I wasn't totally happy getting the other side up and resting it all on the 2 points of the stands.

I was also unable to see down the hole for the cog.

Decided would best be done by the garage with the proper kit.

So where is the best point to support the car ?

Thanks. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I tend to use the trolley jack with a flat wood block under the point where your stand is, when car is on the ground this is nice and "level". This allows to get the car to a height to get the axle stand under the jacking point for support.

RAVE indicates to use the front inner bush mount of the lower arm to provide support, but as the weight of the axle changes the angle, this can be a bit of a fiddle.

Ah. OK. Makes sense. Many thanks.

Have managed to use ramps until this point, but having the wheel off, obviously I can't.

I'm pretty sure the cup on my axle stands is not wide enough to follow the RAVE illustration.

Will have a look when I'm in the garage next.

Thanks again.
