wheel refurb with tyres left on?

seen a few firms offering this - your views?

surely to blast etc the wheels tyres have to be removed - and how can the new 'finish' be baked on?

and talking of wheels - spoke to Pristine Wheels (the best imo) yesterday about getting my allows refurbed - apparently now they have to charge quite a bit extra for RR and similar wheels because their weight is a health and safety issue as they have to be handled by two men especially if they are sent with tyres

i had the wheels for the GC refurbed about 4 years ago as Pristine were about the only company who could do genuine diamond cutting refurb using a CNC machine - those wheels are still as new and cost then was £55 per wheel inc carriage both ways - even now only increased to £60

but RR wheels are £80 each without tyres or £92 with tyres

but when they refurb a wheel its not just the 'face' its the entire wheel

for a wheel refurb you would have to at least break the outside bead and push the tyre down a bit, if the jobs worth doing then its worth doing properly.... ... - .- -.

i only hear good things about Lepsons (www.lepsons.com)

I intend to send my 911 wheels to them via another guy who collects, lends you some wheels and then has them done at lepsons.

The "smart" (Small to Medium Repair Technology) repairers just mask off the wheels and repair/spray the wheels, which is just a short term fix (I know, I have worked there).

To do the job properly you need to take the tyres off, have the wheels shot blasted and degreased, and then either wet painted or powder coated. Powder coating involves "baking" the powder onto the wheels by electric current, and should involve coating the whole wheel, not just the face.

Just to finish, the tyres should then be refitted (don't scratch the finish!!) and re-balanced.

My mate owns a powder coating company and he did a great job for my alloys. Thumbs Up

I had a wheel refurb as it formed a slow leak on the rim. The refurb meand all the crud was removed and the wheel was once again smooth and air tight.. so I'd not bother with anything that doesn't involve the tyre coming off and the whole wheel being sorted. It cost me £50 nearly 2 years back and the wheel is still like new and air tight Thumbs Up 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS
