20" rims on TD6

I've been offered a set of 20" vogue rims at a good price, but was wondering what the ride quality is going to be like and why don't Land Rover recommend them on a TD6? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Ride quality is best on the 18" wheels, if you want to upgrade go to current 19's but avoid the 20's on a TD6.

I've heard it can lead to problems with the steering rack/damper. Discovery 4 HSE

The only reason I can think of why this would happen, is that there's less rubber, meaning more shocks transmitting through to the rim and the connecting mechanicals. THe overall OD is the same when one wheel is put on top of another and the width is the same. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Are there any problems or downsides associated with 19" on a TD6 though?

I wouldn't really want 20" or above but have been thinking of upgrading for a while now as I think the 18" look wrong on a FFRR from some angles.

Anyone got any before/after piccies of their FFRR with 18" then 19" on to help me decide before I trot off to Ebay and spend a chunk of money?

I know you are all going to think i am bias due to what i do and what i use but i have never had a problem with 20s on my TD6 or any clients cars except with the wrong nuts. I regularly supply dealers (inc Main dealer customers) with them and never had an issue and that includes on the RRS TDV6 & TDV8. Lots of them also run 22s and apart from the ride cant see a problem unless you want to go offroad.

RRUK,

for some reason I can see the first piccy (18") but not the second (red cross in corner). Is this a site issue or my work laptop? (I'll check if my own laptop can see it later)

Edited to add: Funnily enough I can see all the photos in the Gallery

However, yours look good with 18". Mine hasn't got the mud flaps and tints, so I wonder if it's more than just the wheels that make mine look "wrong" sometimes! I haven't got an eye for such things really, first thought was that the wheels looked too small on mine.

The 2nd pic is hosted on Flickr so maybe your work firewall is blocking it?

All the extra trinkets make a car look better than when it's bare out of the factory. I've added the chrome side tubes, mudflaps, light gaurds, privacy glass and then the 19" alloys.

Wheels alone though can make a huge difference, I've always been a fan of keeping the car in line with the options available at the time of manufacture, rather than taking a much older car and putting the latest wheels on for example, it would just look wrong.

If you want to update to 19's the 4.4 Vogue 19's are widely available and still look really nice and will match your car's age perfectly. You can pick them up on ebay all the time for a song.

Like these below for example:

That's almost exactly my opinion on upgrading, although I think there is some leeway on matching the age of the car perfectly (the "Spirit" of this I agree with though) .

Those 19" are exactly what I'd been looking at on ebay. Ideally a set of 5 with decent tread on them. Although there don't seem to many of these available at the right price or location ( Censored if I'll pay £100 just to have them shipped!).

I presume that RRS ones fit directly on a FFRR (although these are always in sets of 4).

I think so but do check before buying. The only RRS ones worth considering are the 20" versions though and they are not ideal as the tyre wall profile for the size is too small and you will have a horrible ride along with constant alloy damage (Trust me Big Cry )

I don't think that £100 shipping is anyway near correct, at most its about £30. I was lucky enough to find mine locally so picked them up with the trailer.

I'll keep any eye out for some of those 19" ones for you. Discovery 4 HSE

Noddy / Larry, the 18" wheels shown in Adam's first pic are also available as an option on the RRS - though they do look a little odd on the RRS as the tyre profile is lower. The offset is different to the 19" by about 5 mm (they stick out slightly just a bit more)

I actually quite like these wheels, and they do undoubdedly give a fantastic ride - like an ocean going liner - you don't feel any bumps at all.

19" are ok but the ride is a little bit harder, but then the hadling is sharper and they are OK off road - bit of a compromise. The 20" though imho give a very firm ride and are easliy damaged. Plenty have fitted them to a TD6 without any problems at all - I have even seen a big chain of main agents fitting them to s/h vehciles to make them more attractive and easier to sell in these troubled times (think probably little to do with damaging the vehicle and more to do with the next aspect - a few have complained of very slight Vibration / resonance through the foot brake only when idling and in gear at traffic lights. But then any sensible person doesn't leave their vehicle in drive for extended periods anyway...

Vogue, not totally correct. The ones that were on my car are a very similar design to the RRS HSE 19" wheels, but not the same. These were specific to the FFRR only and were the de-facto 18" rim for the Vogue from 05 reg onwards.

Hardly anyone had them though and as a result, made them quite unique and desirable. The ride with those was amazingly soft, the upgrade to the 19s has been one of good and bad, as I have found I get the vibration in gear at a standstill. But like you say, pop it into Neutral and it goes away.

You can see the difference in these 2 pictures:
