How does it smell? Sweet and acrid or like stale/boiled oil?

Interesting ... for future reference £280 for your turbo to be reconditioned if you DIY. Allow 8 hours for the job. 2008 Nissan Pathfinder Mammoth Sport - "Rory", 1990 110 TD CSW - "Snowy" - 2005 Freelander TD4 S - "Freddie"

To echo Fox's comments above - was there oil in it before your problem started? You say there was no oil in it when you checked it after the noise. Did you check it previously?

Just out of interest, what sort of price would you be looking at to replace the turbo at a independant lr garage or similar? Think mine is going....got oil coming from the casing of it !!!!

Not sure on labour costs for independant garages, but we'd charge about £225 labour

I have a receipt from the previous owner (not that long before I brought my car) and the total price for a reconditioned turbo was £1272.25 fitted.
