Within by budget I've narrowed down to a couple of options..

A nice 2005 TD6 Vogue SE with 60k miles, a full LRSH and RSE pack at £18k

or

A 2006 TDV8 Vogue with 98k miles and full LRSH at £23k

Would I need to be budgeting for a new gearbox soon with the TDV8 approaching 100k miles? Is the mileage just too high ? Am I right in thinking the TDV8 is 'slightly' more economical than the TD6?

Any opinions would be helpful please...

If you can afford the tdv8 then you should go for it in my opinion. I've owned a 2007 tdv8 with 128k on the clock and it drove like new. I don't think you need to budget for a gearbox, just the oil change. If there are problems already with the gearbox then it should be apparent when you drive it.

The tdv8 is an amazing engine and a far better drive than the td6 (which I currently have). I think fuel consumption is very similar.

Obviously the tdv8 gets a load of other revisions too including an updated interior. My Previous RR's!

To me, mileage isn't that important providing the car has been serviced correctly and is in good condition, so I'm gonna say TDV8, it's obviously replaced the TD6 for a good reason

Plus there's the revised interior and better engine as already pointed out.

Speaking of mileage, my dad's mate is a food rep and spends most of his time in his car, he has a '60' plate Merc C class with 30k on the clocks, his previous '07' went back with 145k, both are/were mint condition and drive like new still. 2006 Mercedes CLS

The facelifted TD6 did NOT get the updated interior modifications that came out on the TDV8, so you will have a newer fresher interior with the TDV8. THE INVENTOR OF THE TERM "FULL-FAT RANGE ROVER" :

The TDV8 I'm looking at has the newer style interior (newer seats, terrain response, etc..) in a 2006 model. I'm not sure if all did

My mistake, I thought the better seats were on the early TDV8 too, but it sounds like they were changed when the TDV8 was fitted.

Go for the TDV8 but have an AA/RAC inspection. If all OK you will be getting a bargain as the TDV8 is a much better car to own & drive as well as being considerably more reliable.

PS: An after market warranty (Warranty Direct or Warranty Wise) with MOT cover would make sense as the high mileage may lead to the odd small mechanical failure going forward. (Ball Joints/Bearings etc)

Do you prefer the 'old' seats to the newer style then?

Go for the TDV8, get Land rover to do a 1/2hr inspection (in my experience AA/RAC are not well regarded in their inspection quality), since it is 98K, get the longest warranty you can from a good warranty company, drop al the oil (engine, drives,gearboxes) and off you go. £23K is good value and all cars these days should do 200K no probs. High mileage on a young car means motorway and that is stress free, probably only wear on drivers seat - keep an eye on scrap cars for a younger drivers seat perhaps.
