Switzerland 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey
Swiss MOT groundhog day

So it goes for it's Swiss MOT and fails on: -

Tyre pressure warning light on.
Lower control arm bush worn.
Front discs close to limit.
Rear tyres close to limit.

So I turn off the TPMS using the IID tool (been meaning to do this since fitting my 19's that don't have it).
Replaced both front control arms and have the tracking done.
New front discs and pads.
New rear tyres.

Take it back and they say they have to do the whole test again. This time it fails on: -

Rear reflector missing. (Mrs had bumped a wall).
Handbrake not working well enough.
Oil leak.

Well, the rear reflector was missing from the first test. I wasn't aware it was an MOT issue, but I'll glue it back on.
The handbrake is exactly the same as with the first test, but I have no problem servicing and adjusting it.
There's a tiny amount of oil on the transmission, no drip on the floor, and it looks like it was from when the transmission was serviced.

At this rate I'll be in and out of the MOT service station for ever more.

Worse thing is our 11 year old Fiat Panda has it's test next week.....there'll be no escape!

Oh dear, that is annoying.

I put my daughters 1987 Golf MK2 through the MOT. It sailed through, they noted a small fuel leak but just tightened the jubilee clip for me whilst it was up in the air and it passed. Great service.

I feel your pain! In Belgium there is no standard procedure for example a friend takes his disco 1 with a lift kit every year and this year it failed because of the lift kit!

My l322 just got MOT'ed by the seller so I have a whole year

The only saving grace of the Swiss system is it's not that often. The car was last MOT'd just before I bought it three years ago.

I think that's a bit long for a 13 year old car.

In parts of the word cars/Tucks only get a formal test when sold/Changes hands ! Not everyone has an annual test

It's meant to be after the car is five years old, then every two years, but often this two years slips. The MOT isn't done commercially, you have to go to the Kanton centre where it's done by the Kanton staff.

It's reasonably thorough, but often on ridiculous things, like fitting after market parts which don't have an accompanying document, or because the engine isn't clean.

This is the one I have to go to, and as you can see it's a fairly substantial affair.



The older staff tend to be a bit more tolerant, but the younger ones (like the last one I had) seem straight out of the Hitler youth.

Took the Panda in today.

It failed.

There was some glue residue on the windscreen from an old autobahn vignette.

This wasn't in the middle of the screen, it was up by the mirror where you stick these things. If there was an autobahn vignette over it, it would've passed on this.

To be fair, there were some other things, like the engine wasn't clean enough, a broken bulb, an exhaust clamp and a couple of suspension bushes.

But FFS, glue residue. What a f**kin' Nazi! Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head

A MOT test centre can refuse to test if a vehicle is present in a unsuitable condition to test, that can be dirty or if testing it could damage the car, test equipment or the MOT tester.

A Trap 

In Spain the ITV (MOT) is non-commercial I.e done by the government and their employees. 4 years from new before the first ITV, then every two years until 10yrs old then every year. They are drive through, efficient centers.

I note immigrants to Spain (and Switzerland by the sound of it) donโ€™t understand you cannot fit items to your car yourself or non-standard (fitted by the manufacturer not dealer) parts or non-standard parts to Spain, things like tow bars, window tint, side steps, non-standard light builds (colour etc), roof bars, different sized wheels and/or tyres etc etc.... they have to be fitted in Spain by a licensed Tallier (workshop) and have the certificate of conformity, certificate of figment and invoice to prove they are approved parts and fitted safely. Bringing a non-Spanish car over with anything not on the original build and recognized by Spain will fail the ITV and the vehicle is not allowed to be used until the items removed, you cannot get a garage to sign off the item is OK, approved and fitted safely... you will have to remove the side steps, tow bar, window tint etc and leave it with out or get new Spainish approved new items fitted by an approved garage. They wonโ€™t even allow you to get tints tested by a garage with a light meter to be within the approved limits, if they donโ€™t have the Spanish garages certified stamps etched on the tint plus the tint manufacturers certificate and fitting invoice you will be rejected.

Side steps, tow bars and roof bars, wheels/tyres etc are if purchased and fitted in Spain correctly are added to the vehicle log book and presented at each ITV

The law is simple but immigrants bring their cars over from Germany or the UK etc donโ€™t check the local rules then complain when it takes weeks and a lot of money to put their cars back to spec to comply to local laws and rules.
