Hi all, I have two wheels with leaky valve stems. The car is 2007 VSE 3.6tdv8 with TPMS.

Does anyone know what the situation is here, I have read a variety of horrors like :

1) You cannot just change the stems, you need to change the TPMS unit as well as it is all one unit.
2) You have to change all four at the same time.
3) You have to get exactly the right ones.

Is any of this true?

Can I not just go to my local tyre place and have them fit two new stems for £5 each and be done with it ?

The TPMS valve stem is connected to the TPMS sensor inside the tyre. You can just replace the stem if your TPMS sensor is still working / has plenty of battery life left in it, although it may be prudent to change it whilst you have the tyre off, esp. if they’re of unknown age. Obviously need the correct sensors, readily available on eBay and generally come with the new stem anyway.

No need to do all 4, or at least I see no reason to.

In my experience, once fitted, the new sensors are ‘learnt’ by the car after a couple of miles of driving.

I've never changed just the stem, so can't comment on that.

New units pair with the car after running for a while and can be changed individually.

They have to be the right ones - I think the Jag ones are interchangeable, but have to be the same frequency. eBay seem to have quite a few US spec ones (or at least they used to) and they don't work. The underlying tech changed sometime around 2015 IIRC - so the newer units don't work either.

Alternatively - fit rubber valves and turn off TMPS using an IID tool.

Done £10. Hopefully tyres will now stay up. TPMS messages though now and not cleared after 8 mile journey home above 40mph.

So, after having the valves changed I had "check all tyres" warning and have now driven nearly 20 miles.

I was pulling into the garage to check tyre pressures all around and then the message changed to "Tyre Monitoring System Fault"

So I went back to the tyre place, who checked all tyre pressures and battery health on the sensors - all OK. I cleared the fault but it still says "Check all tyres".

The only thing the tyre people have suggested is to change what they have fitted for genuine Land Rover valves even though they claim the ones they fitted are to the right spec.

Any suggestions please?

Ha, nice idea. That is not a solution for me. I like everything to work as it should, and if it doesn't work I will keep going until it is fixed.
The alternative is that eventually we code everything out and have nothing left to drive

You bought the wrong vehicle if you want everything to work as it should

do a battery reset, it 'might' reboot the relevant ecu's ..... ... - .- -.

I noticed the other day that the TPMS has been switched off on the Supercharged RR that I bought recently and it's something I'd like to turn back on after having a blowout whilst towing in our 2012 which doesn't have TPMS.

My car doesn't have a spare wheel in the boot due to having an LPG tank so I'm a bit worried I'll go to the effort of reinstating it for it to be unhappy about not being able to see the spare.

Stan - sorry I should have mentioned that. I did that in the tyre place as well. +ve and -ve terminals touched together.

Dinng maybe I am just better at fixing things, or paying people to fix things than you are.

David it doesn't see the spare AFAIK I think there's a sensor in each arch that picks up the signal from the tpms transmitter
