Towing electrics

Hi all,

Since the use of my ffrr is changing, I might as well change the twin towing electrics over to the 13 pin type to match the caravan, rather than currently using adapter.

So question is, can I get a plug n play 13pin to replace the twin thats fitted.

I converted mine, took about 40 minutes. Wired a new socket and mounted it on the towbar, ran the new cable into the spare wheel well. The existing cables were cut and spliced onto the new cable, easy to follow from the old wiring colours. BMW i3 Electric Car

The SC that I've just bought has the twin 7 pin towing sockets on it. I want to convert that to 13 pin as well so have bought a standard 13 pin wiring loom from Rob at Duckworths Land Rover.

If you have the standard 7 pin with the LR ECU in the boot you can simply swap the looms over. They're about 150 quid but are plug and play with zero cutting anywhere.

It does but there are additional changes to the towing looms as well.

I converted my P38 from twin 7 pin to 13 pin but when doing so it's not possible to make the battery charge. You can power a caravan fridge and do everything else but the 12v battery on the caravan doesn't charge.

I've got a 12v commercial battery on our flat bed trailer to run a winch and we use the caravan as well so I want a conventional wiring system that will enable me to charge the caravan and the trailer batteries without any mucking around Smile

Lee,
If you go down the wire splicing route to fit, I can highly recommend these connectors.
They are easy to use, very reliable, and neat .

David.

With all due respect, youve done it wrong, the caravan battery will still charge, all of the signals and supplies are present in the 13 pin electrics as they are with twin 7 pin sockets.

I agree with Mike on those connectors. Have a box in the garage dead easy to use, have a practice first tho so you can get the temps right before plunging into your car electrics....

And as above, if you do wire it right then the battery will charge on a 13pin setup. I’ve not rewired the car end but I did redo my last caravan from S/N to 13 pin and it charged fine. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Cheers Mike , I had seen them advertised but wasn't sure.
Will definitely give them a go.
Also I'm good for a heat gun, but will be calling round for a brew soon Thumbs Up Remember:- amateurs built the ark

I had a genuine LR 7N socket on the car so I bought a genuine LR 7S loom and installed it and the pins weren't the same as what you've posted above.

I spent hours researching it at the time, and from memory, now I'm thinking about it, there was a change in the early 2000's (prior to the L322 being available) where the 7S pins changed slightly I'm sure.

I'll dig out what I found later on and will post it.
