P-1173 - which side is the RH side

I am still trying to track down a engine harshness issue, I have the fault code P1173.

I do know it says its a lean/rich fault on the RH side, is the RH bank side ( when sitting in the truck ) on your right?

Or in the UK, the drivers side, correct.

I just purchased 2 new OEM O2 sensors and I really hope this fixes my problem.

I take it you've checked the PCV system? All 4 hoses? A vacuum leak will manifest itself as a fuel trim error due to the unmetered air....

With cars, R and L is always in the direction of travel - hence RHD and LHD

Wanted to update this.

I have had my engine compression checked. The engine appears to be in perfect health, the gauge that I used was not the best but all the cylinders were between 175psi and 180psi on a hot engine. I was quite please with the results.

So, theres no chance that the engine harshness is coming from a damaged cylinder.

I purchased 2 brand new O2 sensors for the RHD side. Once installed, I disconnected the battery to reset the check engine.

With the check engine light off, the engine is still just as harsh.... within 30KM the check engine is back on.

I have a appointment with the land rover dealer this tuesday..... if they cant figure out what the problem is, I am really at a loss as to what to do.

I have checked the following-

spark plugs
coil packs
new O2 sensors
all intake piping ( maybe theres still something I am missing)
MAF
2003 RR 4.4 only 40k miles (current)
2004 RR 4.4 ( just sold)
2000 RR 4.6 (sold)

You didn't answer my question above... Were all 4 PCV pipes replaced?

Sorry Dan, I forgot.

I checked all the hoses and they are all fairly new..... No marshmellow pipes here. It also idles very, very smooth. Its only when its under load that if feels very harsh and you can feel vibration in the floor pan with your feet from 2000rpm-up

Or when I rev it in neutral you really feel something around 4000RPM.

I would check the PCV valve but if I remember correctly when I changed that unit on my other MK3 RR you cant open them.
I guess I can just change it just to be sure. Do you think a faulty valve can be the problem?

I am wondering if when the water pump was changed a few months ago, if its possible the metal emissions pipe were poorly installed if that could cause the harshness.

On your other post I linked to a BMW forum where the guy was having similar problems PLUS a lot of noise coming from his PCV system.

There are 4 pipes in your PCV system, the two easy ones on the top, then two difficult ones which run down the back. Then as you say, there is the valve itself. BMW owners generally experience failure of the rubber diaphragm between 80-120K and I imagine we should expect to see the same on our cars.

The PCV valve itself is not massively expensive (I think I paid £60-£70) bit it's a pig to change and the hour rate can add up depending on which garage you use.

I guess its possible it has something to do with the PCV system....

I will say that on my other MK3 RR that had the check engine light last summer, all the PCV pipes completely failed, other than the check engine light, it still ran very nice..... smooth idle, normal MPG and no engine harshness.

There are two halves to the PCV system though, hence the four pipes. Did you replace/check all four? Or just the two on the top?

Hi Dan,

On my MK3 RR last summer, I changed all 4 pipes + valve. I cracked open the old valve and the valve was in great shape.

On my current MK3 RR, I checked all 4 pipes and they are all in near new condition. Unless the valve is complete faulty ( very possible ) or something is plugged in one of the pipes ( very possible ) it looks good.
I will get a new valve and clean out the cyclone and pipes .

I will see what the dealer has to say tomorrow, I really hope they figure out something..... 2003 RR 4.4 only 40k miles (current)

Just wanted to update this,

I went to the dealer last week to have a 4 wheel alignment+ suspension calibrated ( HUGE difference) , rear hub bushings and the check engine light checked .

$1300 later , about 20km from the dealer the check engine comes on with the same error code P1173!!!

The engine is still just as harsh to the point where you feel it in the floor pan with your feet.....

The truck is handling GREAT, almost agile. Engine has plenty of power and the compression is still perfect BUT the engine harshness is taking any enjoyment out of driving such a beautiful truck.

Any other suggestions ? Maybe a BMW specialist this time? I am at a loss as to what to do...... I just want this truck running like it did in january. 2003 RR 4.4 only 40k miles (current)
