Were any 4.4 V8 UK diesel engined RRs built without DPFs?

Afternoon all,

I currently run (a very deliberate purchase) an early Disco 4 3.0 without a DPF. Before you all rush off for the tar and feathers, yes, I know this the FFRR forum, but stay with me please and I’ll explain.

I don’t do many miles, perhaps 8,000 a year, and far less than that this last year with the pesky virus surging about. I’m on 124,000, so (hopefully) have many more to do in the beastie.

But…

In case things change I like to plan ahead. Project managers know the drill, the 6Ps - Preparation and Planning Prevents Censored Poor Performance.

So…

Having owned a couple of classic RRs back in the day I’m considering returning to the fold.

The 4.4V8 reads as being a good engine, plenty of oomph, not much in the way of issues. BUT I’m fairly sure that with my modest usage a DPF could (would?) spell trouble.

As an alternative I’ve read about the 3.6V8, which, if I’ve understood it correctly, could have had a DPF optioned into the build in the last couple of years, but I suspect it would not exactly have been high on a purchasers wanted list.

Again, if I have it right, a 3.6V8 with a BAS remap has power and torque figures that are very close to a 4.4V8, so I’m thinking that could be a pathway forward if the 4.4 always has a DPF.

I’ve said enough, I reckon, so I hope those with more knowledge and experience will let me know what they think.

Cheers,

Stockers

The 4.4 always has the DPF in the UK. It’s a legal requirement.

A mapped 3.6 might be similar on figures, but it won’t have the awesome 8 speed gearbox attached to it.

In 2 years, I’ve done 2513 miles in my 4.4 TDV8. Just make sure you get the second turbo spun up regularly.....

4.4 TDV8 is fine for most normal driving. During Lockdown I did 5 miles 4 times / week at 25mph, every 2-3 weeks I would take it on a 25 mile run at 40-60mph. No probs whatsoever, and I watch my DPF soot the whole time as I did have some problems a few years ago.

Its fine as long as you aren't sat in traffic doing 2 miles at a time....

Good luck!

It’s not the actual dpfs that go t@ts up, its the ancillaries. For instance on mine, the car was working perfectly for 2 years and then the inlet manifold split very slightly which led to RP and then the yellow and red dpf full warnings. The dpf was actually fine (as evidenced by the low through pressure reading when tested.) it was all the sensors misreading, unable to cope with the erroneous readings.

So the upshot is that my advice is go for it. Forget the dpf probs. But don’t get one that has sat in London and done low miles. Far better a hi mileage motorway muncher.

Mine was 83,000 miles and 6 years old and the only probs were the inlet manifold which is a known prob on all the engines, especially 3L on Jag and ffsports.

Now on 105,000 and going strong. Was going to change for a 405 bit decided to keep her and see how we go.

Some really interesting feedback and information. Thanks to all.

I agree that a vehicle with more miles can be a good bet, providing, of course it’s been well looked after. To me it says it hasn’t been sitting around with this, that or the other to be sorted. Cars ‘like’ to be used. My Disco had done 77,000 in five years before she became mine.

I’ve also had to have one of the inlet manifolds done on my 3.0V6. Not cheap, but then, anyone expecting these vehicles to be cheap, especially when I’m no kind of mechanic, is going to be disappointed. I’m pretty sure for all of us here the pleasure of ownership is far higher than the money we pay out to make it happen.

The 4.4 is sounding ever more tempting. I know there are many good reasons to buy a 405 but I think the look of the 322 is more classic. We’ll have to see. Thanks again.

Cheers,

Stockers.

The general consensus seems to be that the L405 is a better car, but the L322 is a better Range Rover.....

When did the 4.4 get the 8 speed gearbox? My 2011 model year (registered December 2010) only has a 6 speed gearbox.

The 4.4 TDV8 always had the 8 speed gearbox fitted. It’s the one with the rotary dial.

That's what I thought but then I found some paperwork saying it was 6 speed and the manual shift option only let me go to sixth but perhaps I just wasn't going fast enough. I think it is an 8 speed despite the misinformation.

This is what confused me. IID thinks it is six speed for some reason.

I’ve owned 2 x 3.0 SDV6 D4’s and the SDV8 Fatty and loved them both but at that kind of mileage, I would only look at the V8 petrol as well Thumbs Up
