Coolant haemorrhage lots of drips 2011 l322 tdv8 4.4

Hi all

I had a lovely surprise last night with coolant torrent from front and back of engine. I’m guessing it’s oil cooler. I was just curious what the book time is to replace one. I’m just trying to work out how much Vaseline I’ll need for the bill. 😁

I had a look through the workshop manual but couldn’t see times in there. It’s booked in At a specialist next week so I’ll mention o rings.

Here’s a video for entertainment with it

I “think” it’s likely pooled into the vee, my driveway is inclined and as I’ve shunted it’s pushed it out both ends. I only got under car as I noticed a drive stain when I pulled up. Engines not shown any temp warnings neither low coolant however I’m leaving it on drive unused until it goes in.

I’ve not heard of an oil cooler on the 4.4 leaking like that. Normally it’s oil that leaks out, or the coolant goes into the oil and vice versa.

Might be wrong.

At least you’ve seen it.

I paid just over £1000 for mine to be fixed, at the start of 2016, though that involved 4 or 5 coolant system flushes to get rid of the oil....

I think the cooler is £300 odd to buy.

I had my oil cooler replaced last year by a good Indy, book time is 4.5hrs & genuine LR oil cooler was £300 + vat so that gives you a rough idea of basic costs. Anything between £700-£1k should do it comfortably. I think, if you're on a budget, you can buy a pattern oil cooler [Nissen I think] for a few pounds less but that's entirely up to you.
Hope this helps.
BTW like mj said, I've not heard of the coolant being dumped out like that, oil yes, but not water. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened but I would make double sure it is the cooler first.

Definitely a bizarre one. I’ll have to look under the engine cover tomorrow and see what I can spot, I wonder if it could be a pipe let go. Engine was running fine up to me noticing, didn’t notice any smoke or smells. I have had one or two whiffs of burnt oil after a long drive but doesn’t seem to have lost any.

The 'burnt oil smell' may well be a giveaway, mine had been leaking a while I reckon then one day I pulled into a Shell garage to fill up & smoke rising from the engine bay........that ain't good! Oil cooler was goosed, common occurrence apparently.

Had a further dig today and it looks like one part of the puzzle potentially is a hose blowing. Anyone else had similar?

I've had coolant drips in that area - the O rings perish.

Does the 4.4 have the same coolant hose that runs along the V that the 4.2 S/C Petrol has? Mine failed on that and I had coolant running like your picture.

I'm not familiar with the 4.4 TDV8 though so I may be talking rubbish! (par for the course) Formerly happymadison1978

Well we are in "'lets hope the warranty covers it" territory

Oil cooler needs replacing
New reservoir as there is an issue with that
Alloy coolant pipe fractured at back
Oil and coolant.

I'm in two minds with this in that it's crap that it's happened but also that when it's done its one of the big jobs out the way

99% of oil coolers have to be replaced on these at some point.
It's a "feature" of the 4.4 TDV8 that you have to live with...
Some do just gaskets, best do gaskets AND cooler as they can warp and not sit flush.
Minor job in comparison with other issues they can have... Rolling with laughter Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Well the saga continues.

After weeks of a warranty company wasting my time with the wear and tear clause I’m no further forward. Oil cooler is being changed but a coolant pipe I need is no longer manufactured and no one has it in stock in uk or Europe from what I can see. Garage has been superb and is going to fabricate something as the original is unrepairable but trust me to buy the Range Rover with the part where the manufacturer is under consultation and they can’t get it.

Hopefully it’s sorted soon

Sounds like you have a decent garage doing the work, as most would just say can't do it without the part!.
As a note, Manufacturers only need to have parts access / supply for 10 years. Whistle

Just thought I would add my story here as it may help.
4.4 TDV8

Day or so after buying it Coolant low warning.
The fan was hitting a coolant pipe and had rubbed through.
I cut out the split bit and replaced with a section of tube.
Also bent the metal splitter as that must have been what caused the pipe to be so close to the fan.

Fast forward a year or so...

Yesterday after a 100 mile journey I got coolant low again.
Had a look today and there were signs of a leak at the 2 pipes in and out of engine to heater system. (The ones with quick release clips on them)
I replaced the clamps with jubilee clamps and it quickly became apparent the plastic had gone brittle and they broke.

Easy to see with engine cover off but worth keeping an eye on.

It looks like the plastic part is only available with complete pipe. 1 is double the price of the other. However I am certain the plastic part is identical.

I’m using a company that have some well known vehicles they’ve created.I’m pleased with their service so far. I’ve been on the end of the “my mate only charges £40ph” from friends but I want to take a heart problem to a cardiologist, not a psychologist so I’ll pay it.
