4.4 Diesel very sick

Hi, not been on here in a while as have been running a D4 and defender but just bought a 2010 L322 vogue 4.4 diesel with issues so appealing to the wise ones for advice/hel & support.
It is running very rough, lumpy, suspected misfire and smoking.
IID tool only showing one fault, EGR temp sensor A-circuit high?
Done loads of research and fine it hard to believe this is the problem as I would say worst case it’s blown a piston as there is quite a bit of crankcase pressure?
I have thoughts ranging from turbos , EGR’s stuck, DPF blocked, overfuelling injectors to possible blown piston, valve train issues....?
Car has done 128000 and doesn’t look to have been stripped/ worked on recently so any help or pointers would be appreciated thx

"EGR temp sensor A-circuit high" has been known to cause problems. It's the temperature sensor on the exhaust manifold which can cause the EGR to play up.

Hi Mike, thanks for the response, I did plug in my auto box diagnostic tool and that also brought up the same problem I just can’t get my head around the symptoms it is showing which equate in my mind to something far more serious.
I am awaiting delivery of a new IID tool as Patrick did me a deal due to present one playing up and not showing fault codes without a workaround he provided so will see what that says when it arrives.thx

Hi Blankone
The EGR sensor fault is common and IMO unlikely to be your cause.
I would go back to basics of Diesel engine diagnosis.

The 4.4TDV8 is pretty robust and at your mileage should not let go if it's been well maintained, particularly oil changes. The going practice here is 5-6k intervals. The only more serious failures I've read about are turbos but they are not at all common unlike the 3.6TDV8 Cheers, Greg

I agree with Greg, although mine has only done 80k, but at least half of them with the EGR code showing and it runs fine.
You could list out your “ live value “ readings and plenty on here will be able to compare and highlight anything way out of the normal, but I would start with basics, split hoses etc.
It is also worth mentioning that the plenum on mine and throttle body have just been cleaned out of crud that builds up and chokes the breathing and the difference is gobsmacking in the way the engine revs freely and pulls like an express train.

Cheers

Thanks for the responses,
I do feel there is more going on than just a sensor, I am of the feeling this one has been drive to within an inch of its life😂
but can’t argue with that for what I paid for it, I do agree on going back to basics before throwing money at it possibly even a compression test or scope to eliminate bore/piston and valve issues.
Will see what the new IID tool comes up with when I get it and report back thxs

Just a thought, cheap job, how about changing the fuel filter if you don’t know how long it has been on ??
