EGR and intake system maintenance

Hello one and all,

I've recently got back into JLR fun with a 2012 4.4 tdv8 that has 140k on the clock. It comes with a years warranty and fsh but these cars always have me worrying about what's about to go wrong!

The car is in great condition but as this has done a few miles and is a dirty diesel I'm guessing the egr and intake bits are going to be in sub optimal condition.

What's the view of you lovely people on this issue with the 4.4 tdv8.... .does this engine suffer badly from it....is an egr delete useful (from what I have read it seems best left alone ??)

EGR delete - have yet to read about anybody doing it successfully. Removal of the intake plenum on top of the engine to clean out the oil and soot crud is a common but very messy task ( do a search) cleaning of the throttle plate is probably wise but cleaning the MAP sensor is essential and easy - remove and blast out the crud with brake cleaner. These block up very quickly and a check and clean every 5k miles is worthwhile. Also check for any leaks on the intake or a split in the plastic seams which a coating of oil and soot will giveaway. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The general consensus on this forum is to leave the EGR in place. There is conflicting arguments on its purpose with the DPF filter, with a few arguments that suggest removing it from use doesn’t affect the DFP… as as mentioned by JayGee we don’t have posts claiming “its all fine” from anyone.
There was a YouTube video of someone who did it… but i read reports he had put it back. Nothing official and all very quiet…

Again, as JayGee suggested a good clean should help and is a job for me too in the next month or so. I have a tab open on how to do this in preparation so have this url to hand…

Its for the replacement of the Oil Cooler, but shows what is needed to get the Throttle Body and Plenum out… plus further down shows the crud build up. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Oh, and when you start this job make sure you heed the warning about the plastic connector… it really does break easily and is an £80 replacement!





Lastly, i would recommend you head to the WIKI section, and locate the RAVE manual download. Its invaluable for the instruction on how to dismantle the car! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Awesome, thanks for the head start

I'll leave the egr alone and just give it a good preventative clean before I have issues

I've done lots of work on old D2s and other makes....this is my first tdv8 though.

I keep dreaming of a clean intake system but have nightmares about the kind of mess I'd create achieving it. Also the speed at which it would build up again after logging how often the EGR valve is open (most of the time) and cycling this stuff through the intake. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

That’s a lot of crud. Did you have an issue that caused that, or is it normal?
At what mileage did you tackle that job? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Normal for these engines. EGR valve open under most driving conditions so exhaust continually cycling through the intake. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

It's quite common on diesel engines. My butterfly valve was sticking a bit causing jerky off throttle acceleration from stand still.

We've researched EGR and DPF deletes extensively on the 4.4 TDV8 and taken advice from very experienced modifying shops as well as LR chief mechanics.
Exaclty as Jaygee and FFRR say above there is no conclusive evidence proving it is do-able.

It's a different story on a 3.6 - easy with blanking plates readily available....

Thanks all

I'll take the MAP sensor out today for a look...but I think I need to plan in a deep clean for the EGR/intake

My car is running fine but I'd rather do this before it gets a problem. Do you know how long a job it is ( excluding the cleaning bit ) for a slightly better than average ( Laughing ) home DIY mechanic

I have three kids so planning a job is always fun

If it's running fine I would just clean the MAP sensor only mate. The inlet hose has a seal inside and you risk it leaking if you disturb it. You can't buy the seal on it's own meaning buying a new hose.
