4.4 TDV8 Head Gasket Failure

So guys looking for a bit of a steer from the more knowledgeable of you please !
I have a 2012 4.4 Westminster with 72,000 miles on her and over the last 6 months I have started to lose
Coolant (about a litre every 1000 miles). 1st visit to main dealer pressure tested and no fault found, given
Back and coolant loss continued. Next visit to main dealer EGR cooler replaced and a nice £1800 bill presented,
Still loosing coolant and now back with main dealer and diagnosed as Head Gasket failure. Fortunately I do have
a warranty which will cover the work. However my question is how likely is this to be a head gasket car has been
Serviced to schedule and lives a cosseted life ? Not one I’ve read about on this engine before on the forum !

Are you sure it’s not the oil cooler rubber gaskets ? It can leak internally and you would never know. Since I did mine (for an oil leak) the very small losses I had have stopped thankfully

I've got the same vehicle as you & if the head gasket was diagnosed I'd be heart broken at that mileage.
I've never read of HG failure on these girls on this forum in the time I've been a member.
I would suggest finding a good Indy & seek their advice as a 'second opinion', I'm not saying your MD is wrong but I would prefer a second person to tell me xyz. If both say HG failure then engage your warranty.
As a matter of interest, how long have you owned the car? Just thinking has the problem been with you since purchase?

I also have a 4.4 TDV8 and was losing a small amount of coolant. I have done the oil cooler oil leak and replaced the entire unit. While doing this, I also found a perished O ring that was losing coolant at this connector to the oil cooler:

Instead of replacing the entire hose (and having to go deeper into the engine), I just bought the hose part and put the new O ring into the old hose connector and it was fixed immediately.

However, I've since noticed I am still losing a small amount of coolant after long runs, so I bought one of these:

Which includes a fitting for the RR 4.4 TDV8 expansion tank. At 1 bar pressure I could see no leaks even after a 30m wait, but when I put it up to 1.5 bar, I immediately spotted the slow coolant drip from the end of this hose connector into the engine V:

The leak is from LR part number LR029140. It leaked from the smaller side pipe with the clip on it (not the yellow one), so another perished O ring. It was clearly speaking a small amount onto the engine and evaporating, so hard to detect.

I'd therefore re-check, as others advise, that it isn't simply a perished O ring causing the leak. Best of luck and keep us posted please. Thanks, Matt

We have to remember that MD's exist primarily to sell new, and still in warranty used, vehicles and to service and repair these. They are generally not very good at fixing anything that does not fit the above category and most of their 'technicians' won't have seen anything more than 5 or 6 years old. The indies are the places to go, they understand the common issues and are prepared to actually fault find rather than just throw their customer's money at the problem in the hope they srike lucky.

I have been on this forum for a good few years and have never heard of a 4.4 TdV8 HG failure, never. Drives:

Thank you all for your advice and comments. Confirming my thoughts that I hadn’t seen anything on the forum regarding HG on the 4.4. I went into the MD and spoke to the senior technician who is now on the car and pointed him towards the oil cooler gaskets. Will wait and see what they report back but think I will get a second opinion before authorising HG replacement. To be fair I have used this MD for many years and they have always been very good. If all the work is at no cost to you then just let them do it. If it still leaks after that then back it goes in to the MD.

So latest update chaps. Have taken the car away from the MD after a week of no progress and head scratching ! According to their Lead technician it’s not the HG but he can't find a leak (am I sure it’s loosing coolant, patronising ?). Now going to take it to a recommended Indy and get them to change the pipes that Matt has suggested and see how we go. Not the Oil Cooler gaskets as these were done in Dec when the EGR cooler was replaced.

2007 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Stornoway Grey

Although mine is a 4.2 supercharged, it took me about 6 months to track down a small coolant leak and it only became detectable when it got worse, if its dripping onto something thats hot it just flashes off and you never see any evidence under the car.

Indy with a pressure test and some uv dye in the coolant should be able to get to the bottom of it though.

My indie who has 25 yrs LR experience is currently fixing a 2011 4.4 tdv8 which has the same symptoms - he suspects the egr cooler and will let me know how he gets on.

My 2011 had an annoying leak mate and it was the top hose to thermostat housing. O ring had gone. I pressurized the system and saw it straight away using a torch. I adapted an old expansion bottle cap to put some pressure in the system.

I agree. I think they went down this expensive hose connection system purely for ease of production because you just push them on and the job is done.

I'm sure I have a small weep somewhere so might get it pressure tested or just buy that tester myself. Might come in handy on my "new LR project" too Whistle

Anyway,
1) Have you got the part number for hose connector to the EGR that you bought then used the O ring out of?
2) The other leak you had. Did you just buy an O ring? If yes, where did you get it from and size etc?
