Upgrade / Swap HVAC unit

Hi All,

Not sure if this should be in this part of the forum or 'What did you do in your...." part but it is a modification so I placed it here !!!

I know this has been done perhaps 100's of times before but I've just updated (upgraded ?) the HVAC unit in my 2015 Vogues SE to the (Slightly) later HVAC unit to allow the heated seats to work without using the screen.

It was one thing that slightly disappointed me on a 2015 vs the later 2016 model.

After some investigation got the unit from an eBay salvage supplier for £80 which I thought wasn't too bad.

I might be wrong but I think the key thing I learned whilst researching was to get the part number beginning with a G not the D of the original.

Anyway here are some pics of the swap.

Good condition as received from the salvage seller on eBay

This is the new HVAC note the part number starting with a G not a D

I didn't bother taking a picture of removing the trim surround at the sides or the top you know how to do this I'm sure - if not there are some videos on youtube - I was a bit worried about this and the sides were a little stiff - but came away nicely - the top was easier - I started at the right and then gently prised it away. I then removed the trim clips (some came out with the panel) and put them back in the right place in the dash.

Next was the removal of the frame for the display so you can get at the four torx screws actually holding the HVAC unit in, accomplished by removing four torx screws and then gently removing the trim panel for the HVAC unit.

Store both safely (and away from each other so they don't get scratched !)

Then remove the 4 torx screws from the HVAC unit and gently move forward - there is plenty of cable to allow the unit to be pulled forward, then simply unclip the single connector

I didn't take any photos of this as you know how these things work !

Swap to the new unit (don't get them confused!!) the easy way to check is that in the new unit the two outer dials can be pressed (they have a switch in them!) the old one doesn't.

The refitting is simple the reverse of the removal. -

replace 4 torx screws in the HVAC unit

rrefit the HVAC trim panel (make sure it clicks into place propsely)

Put the frame for the display back in using 4 torx screws (it only goes one way with the bigger tabs at the top otherwise is doesn't sit correctly!)

replace the top display trim panel - taking care to align the clips correctly - and ensuring that the all the clips (especially at the top and bottom of the display are fully home)

replace the two side trims

And then test the unit.

Don't do as I did and panic slightly when testing the unit, without the car started the HVAC comes on fine and will work, but pressing the two outer dials will have no effect (panic!!) - but then I remembered a post I saw that said that they only worked when the car was started - started the car and hey presto - working as two picture below

overall time to complete was 40 minutes in the sunshine

I know its a simple modification but it makes the usability of the already wonderful car even better for me !!

Now - considering upgrading the display - but I quite like the dual TV (you know passenger watching TV whilst driver can see sat nav etc) and I'd loose this I think - such a shame.

Happy Easter everyone !! L405 4.4 V8 Vogue SE Santorini Black

Great stuff. It's something I'd love to do so must keep a look out on eBay for a panel. Thanks for posting
all the info.

Re: Upgrade / Swap HVAC unit

I had no idea this changed later and it's something I'll have to seriously consider as I really miss the simple buttons of my previous car. Stabbing at a touch screen is much more difficult than pressing a physical switch.

Do you know if the final two letters, 'DG' in the case of your new unit, are of any significance?
Also, are the switches in the knobs tactile so a seller could confirm they are the version with switches?

Thanks Chris

Hi MrWold,

Your first question "

I have no idea I'm afraid! - all I know is that my 'old' unit has the same DG on the label - and the part number is exactly the same other than the first letter changing from a D to G on the new unit - Sorry I can't be of more help !

This is my old unit (below) and as you can see the only difference is the first letter, everything else is the same.

The second question is easier - Yes there is a definite difference between the two - the new one has a definite 'switch' feel to it - it moves 'in' when you press it - my old one doesn't - so a seller should be able to tell you that I would think, no switch and it's not suitable

For full disclosure - I scanned my car this morning with my IID scanner and I noticed an error code on the HVAC unit - which was 'invalid switch combination' - no other errors and everything works correctly on the HVAC unit (I tested everything this morning!!) and so I guess it means that the car doesn't recognise the panel correctly - but it has no effect on its operation - It might be possible to change the CCF to eliminate the error but I'm really not that bothered - I will keep an eye on it, I will keep my old unit to swap back just in case.!!

It worked immediately with no programming - just swap and go.

For me look and the convenience is worth it !!

If anyone knows if this is fixable I'd love to know - I might ask GAP to see if its something that can be changed in the CCF but my thinking is that it might not be.

I'm not sure if my unit came from a sport or a range rover perhaps that might explain the error - but the unit number is the same for both so I don't think that's the cause, its just that my car isn't meant to have it (obviously!!)

From my limited research on the net - other unit part numbers might work - but the key thing is the press 'switch' capability - no switch action then definitely won't work !!!

Obviously it your choice and risk but fro me it was worth it - relatively easy to do and for me a good modifcation. L405 4.4 V8 Vogue SE Santorini Black

Thanks RutlandBoy as I cross-posted. Very useful.
Answering my own question here but it looks like the 'CC' suffix is always missing the seat button and belongs to the Sport. An HPLA-18A802-CC pictured:

That leaves the 'DC' vs the 'DG'. Anyone know? Chris

Do you have a scanner ? if so does yours throw and error like mine does ? (Invalid switch combination)

If not I'm puzzled by my error !!! (or of course how did you fix it !!)

Thanks

Hi Chris, yeah the code is normal when you replace the panel so don't fret. It doesn't affect anything. In all honesty, I haven't tried to code it out with the IID tool but I've taken the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' approach. Kev

I’ve completed this upgrade also (on an MY15) & get the same code when scanning with the iid - although as you say, everything functions ok.

I've just picked up a GPLA....DH on a certain auction site so fingers crossed that that suffix is OK. There are several reports on forums across the pond that it works. Chris
