Brake fluid change

Can’t seem to find a wiki for a full brake fluid change for the L322. Does anybody know if this is a diy job or does it require specialist machinery and specialist know-how?

Changing the brake fluid is almost exactly the same as bleeding the brakes, the only slight difference being that you keep bleeding a particular wheel until the new fluid is expelled. You will know as soon as the new fluid comes through by the obvious clean colour. The only thing you have to be careful about is not letting the fluid level in the reservoir drop too low.
My procedure,
All done with car on the ground.
Ring spanner over bleed nipple, length of clear plastic tube onto nipple, empty dog food can to collect expelled fluid.
Get assistant to press hard on brake pedal and hold, release brake nipple until brake pedal goes to floor. Hold pedal down and close nipple. Repeat until new clear brake fluid is evident.
Repeat on all other wheels
Make sure to check brake fluid level regularly.
I recently did mine, took about 20 minutes. Thumbs Up

When we did the L322 we used SDD which purged the ABS module which also directed you in terms of the sequence, not sure if it made a huge difference using SDD but the modules didn’t half make a racket.

The advice above is a time honoured tradition when it comes to bleeding brakes etc I remember pressing the peddle for my old man and my other half loathes to do it for me today, although I recently did my lotus with a

You can't just bleed the brakes in a conventional way as there is fluid in the ABS circuit that also needs to be flushed out.

The ABS circuit is the same circuit as the service brakes. All the ABS pump does, is interrupt the pressure to the wheel that has lost traction.

As long as the reservoir has not run dry, you can bleed the brakes with the "pump the pedal" method just fine.

The only caveats are to move the pedal slowly in either direction and for older cars don't go al the way to the floor or it CAN invert the seals. Highly unlikely but there is s remote possibility.

I did my brakes this way and they are operating just as expected. Christian.

The only reason I used the IID tool for mine is because the circuit had been completely drained down.

When I was doing work on the car the cling film over the master cylinder didn't work, the glove over the end of the brake pipe burst and I had a puddle of brake fluid on the floor and an empty reservoir.

The sequence instructed by my IID tool wasn't the same as what was in the manual so I did it both ways. Pedal feel now is fantastic Smile

Any problems, shout! You can guarantee someone has been there before.

Ahh! Someone whose used one!

How do you find them? We bought a vacuum operated one that goes on the compressor in the shed and is meant to suck the fluid through the system but we've never had much luck with it so I've been reluctant to buy another one to try. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I love it and would never go back to old, traditional method of pumping the brakes. I've used it on a few cars now including my old L320, my current L405 and my wife's little BMW.

I removed all of the calipers on the L405 for 48 hours whilst I painted them and the fluid completely drained out of the system. The pressure bleeder did a great job of pushing the new fluid through. Kev
