HELP bad engine sound! 4.4 TDV8

Hi all

Bought this car a few weeks ago and the engine has started to sound awful, the garage I got it from is telling me it’s supposed to sound like it, what do you guys think the issue is?

I don’t know what it is, but it shouldn’t sound like that.

Anything to do with the viscous fan?

Definitely not normal. Judging by the frequency it sounds as though it is occurring on a single cylinder.

I checked the simple stuff isn’t related to the fan unfortunately.

The garage you bought it from sound like bunch of lying shysters Censored

Sounds very much like its coming from one cylinder. check your consumer rights, as I am damn sure you should be able to make them fix it or take the car back, especially if you bought it recently.

there was another recent thread involving consumer rights, some excellent advice was offered, someone with this knowledge should be along soon.

If they continue to deny that there is a fault on the car, then folks on here will want you to name and shame the garage involved.

The thing is, i'm willing to name and shame if anything isn't done but I travelled 3 hours to collect the car so going back and forth isn't really an option.

I suppose I should've used a local dealer but this was the price / spec i wanted, which is why I was looking for answers to see if it's something simple but it occurs to me that it might be pretty severe engine damage requiring a rebuild.

As these engines tend to be pretty bulletproof and the few issues are well documented on here, I couldn't find ANY making this noise though.

Cretosx as you are in London, not in the boonies like me, someone on here should be able to recommend a good garage or a good indy specialist in London. With a correct diagnosis, you could ask the seller if they will pay for repairs / collect the car and repair etc. I am sure your consumer rights could mandate this.

I have heard similar noises at sea on engines, there are quite a few possible causes, a definitive answer will not be possible to diagnose remotely, you really need an answer after an inspection / diagnosis. At a rough guess, maybe a problem with the tappets / a valve / cam(shaft) or an injector.

Thats not right by a very long way. It sounds very much like a cam / lifter issue but it really is not right.

As others have said, take it back, give them a chance to fi=x it or get them to agree taking it to a local specialist at their expense or reject it and have a refund which youre entitled to after giving them a chance to repair it. BMW i3 Electric Car

Definitely not right, I would say a piston my self, sounds a bit more than a tappet. Wouldn’t suggest driving far, in case more damage. Good luck with getting a satisfactory resolution.

I would definitely heed QuebecTango's advice, personally I would not drive that car anywhere, it could end up with a lot more damage.

I agree it sounds heavier than a valve / lifter but I feel it's too slow to be a piston, valve gear runs at half speed thats what made me head that way.

One thing for sure it does sound nasty. BMW i3 Electric Car

The 2015 consumer rights act means you can demand a full refund if you return it within 30days of purchase if it develops a fault. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
