TDV8 Gearbox Fluid

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the LR specified gearbox oil is for a 2007MY TDV8, which I understand is a ZF6HP unit?

The manual just says "sealed for life". I have looked on the Wiki, however this only lists lubricants for the petrol and TD6 models, not the TDV8.

Also - if I am flushing the gearbox, should I also do the front and rear diffs and transfer box? Does anybody have an approximate cost for both diffs and the transfer box as opposed to just the gearbox?

Olders, I recommend you call Gordon at 4-Tech. He's Cambridge based so not too far from you. This is a subject which has a different answer depending on who you talk to. What I will say however is that these gearboxes are not sealed for life. If the fluid is not changed you end up with transmission shunt and clonky changes.

The genuine LR fluid is made by Shell I believe but no matter. The specification is quite detailed and use of the wrong fluid is not recommended.

Land Rover have a service schedule for the TDV8 stating milage/age.

For transmission / Drive fluids

10 Years or 240000KMS for gearbox
5 years or 120000kms for transfer box
10 years for diffs front and rear.

I think if you ask LR for a price for transmisson fluid you could get the fluid make / grade and maybe source else where but it must be exactly the same.

This info I believe to be correct but LR should be able to confirm what is required for a service at the above milages.

Do you have a problem with the transmission as Garry posted about the link causing a loss of drive

£22.00 a litre Evil or Very Mad

For summat that you and I can buy from Smith and Allan for less than a fiver a litre. (assuming you can use a 209 litre drum of course. Big Cry )

Which is why I suggested talking to Gordon at 4-Tech Wink He does the megaflush which changes 98% of the fluid for less money than we can buy the fluid for. The box on the TDV8 holds just over 14 litres of fluid BTW. So changing 6 litres gets about 40% of it. The 2nd flush then gets another 25% of the original dirty fluid which still leaves 35% (one third) of the old fluid in the box.

Also worth checking if the software on the gearbox ECU has been updated. I had this done on a D3 to help with the 1st gear 'Bang', something else which is well documented on these transmissions.

The last thing I can think of is to get the gearbox adaptives cleared from the ECU. For some reason these have the ability to learn some bad habits as well as your driving style. Needs dealer IDS or a Faultmate to do this.

Booked in for a megaflush with 4-Tech on Tuesday. They are going to change the oil in both diffs and the transfer box at the same time.

Quoted me £250 inc VAT for the gearbox flush alone. Does that sound right? I thought I read somewhere (but now can't find it again!) that someone had this done for £150 +vat - can anybody who has had this done confirm the price they paid?

FYI - diffs and transfer box fluids change costing circa £60 for oil (about right from my research) plus 1 hours labour at £60 per hr.

Hopefully this will sort out my issues but if not will try that gear selecter thing. Many thanks.

Re. The gearbox ecu re-programme - sounds like I might need to get this done. Any idea of cost and indeed when this update was released by LR?

£250 is about right, certainly by what I paid last time. If you can find anyone who'll do it for £150 then post up please Mr. Green

Not sure on the latest box update from LR - maybe try calling your local dealer with the chassis number to see if all updates and recalls have been done.

Finally found where I read about the Megaflush for £150+vat....

Disco_steve on the Disco3 forum had his D3 done for this price by Gloucester Road Gearboxes in Bristol. Although if you read the full thread it seems to vary a bit! Some paid £140, some £150 and others £160. Link below:

What I was going to say before I realised it has been said at the beginning is that Land Rover only recommend changing the transmission oil on petrol engined FullFats with a 6 speed ZF transmit ion 2008 MY Supercharged
