Windscreen insurance claim, beware.

A few months ago I picked up a chip on my L405 windscreen. So as per my insurance company I phoned Autoglass direct. They came and I paid them £10 excess, again as per Churchill insurance conditions.
So couple of days ago agreed a new insurance for the future. Answered all the questions. “Any claims or losses in the last five years”. Answer no.
Got an email from the new insurer. I have a claim registered on the “Claims underwriters exchange” where e companies share claims information. Couldn’t work this out, haven’t had any accident claims. It turned out that Churchill have registered my windscreen repair on this database, the new insurers wanted an extra £65 because of this. I have a protected NCD. So beware of windscreen chips repaired Free !!!! 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

Update.
After over an hour of phone calls, Churchill and Autoglass have admitted that it was a system error. But it then took ages to get them to remove the “system error” from the insurance claims database. But it finally happened. So one to be aware of. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

I've certainly known about this for a long time. It's not a mistake or database error.

A 'claim' is a claim! Where an insurance company is required to pay for something, a claim has been made to start the process.

I had a windscreen claim on my Vogue about ten years ago and was made aware of that fact at the next renewal. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

I had to declare a windscreen repair when I renewed my insurance a couple of years ago, it appears in the drop down box in the comparison sites as well. I can’t imagine not declaring it would invalidate your insurance, but it’s not worth the risk for a few £.

Completely agree with the point though, you save the, money getting a repair rather than replacement and you still get clobbered. I’ve got a chip in my new car….will need a replacement windscreen, so I’m holding off for as long as I can! MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

Whilst I agree that a claim is a claim. The insurance companies make a big deal that a windscreen repair won’t impact your NCD, clearly they do. Simply having that claim on the Industry database, resulted in me having to answer the question about having claims in the past five years, in the positive box. Resulting in the new insurer wanting £65 more premium. They make the rules, they should stick to them. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

Most people don't understand NCD. All claims even if you claim against someone else in a no fault situation raise your premium as you are now concidered by the insurers algorithms as being a higher risk. Given that your ins is now going to be loaded for the next 5 yrs you can see why it's cheaper not to make any claim on your ins unless you have no choice. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

This does Not only apply to windscreen claims.
Be careful of notifying your insurance company when the Third party have admitted responsibility & are accepting costs, as this will be registered under the same principle & claim filed. Whistle

It doesn't affect your NCD - you still get the same level of discount, it is just deducted off a higher amount!

Example:

£1000 premium less 65% discount is £450.00

£1145 premium less 65% discount is £515.25

The base premium has increased by £145 due to a claim, but the NCD is still the same, resulting in a £65.25 increase in your payment. Thumbs Up The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Had exactly the same issue for a chip repair from Admiral, 10 quid cost to have it repaired by autoglass but when I got my proof of no claims when switching insurers the claim was listed for the chip. New insurer still stuck with the same price though when I submitted the proof of no claims. 2021 P400 Silicon Silver AB

I had the same with the AA Insurance when it came to renewal time i had a claim on my renewal after a repair and they said it was correct so it will be the last repair i have i would rather pay the £70 every couple of years and turn the chip into a new windscreen as the screen picks up plenty of other marks that makes it look rough.

So it seems to me, don’t bother to try to save the screen with a repair. Just as Jon said, make them pay for a whole screen every few years, at least you get hit for a real repair/claim. Insurance companies shooting themselves in the foot. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.
