Touchscreen update for 2016 and earlier - where are we?

In the past few years there have been quite a number of threads in this forum featuring hardware updates to the factory satnav and screen system to especially include the functionality of Apple CarPlay or Android equivalents.

I’ve kept a keen interest on the posts as I’d like to do something along these lines, however just don’t think I’ve seen an unqualified endorsement of any system - there always seem to be snags of one kind or another - with either the technology having caveats or issues with the manufacturer / dealer.

I’d be prepared to replace the existing screen but am not at all into the idea of the lower AC touchscreen upgrade, nor indeed the 460 lookalike with the stuck-on iPad look. I’d like to keep the existing LR factory functionality but be able to switch to a CarPlay screen easily. I’ve got the reference audio system which I’m very happy with, so anything that downgrades audio playback quality is also a non-starter.

So, the reason for this post is to try and draw a summary at the latter part of 2023 to ask the question, is there a retrofit system out there that you’d unconditionally recommend to me and others with the MY2016 and earlier screens? 2016 SDV8 AB

I would say I am in exactly the same place currently. Been looking at options for a while but not really found anyone who can recommend a system that really does work without issues.

I was leaning towards ordering the 12” system from Poseidon but I then read negative reviews and since then their website has been down and Companies House were threatening to strike the company off!

I would love to upgrade but don’t want an inferior retrofit system.

i've researched all the options for AA/carplay integration from add on modules to replacement screens.
all seem to have restrictions and bugs and because they are of chinese origin they are a pain to get sorted or replaced.

i went for the additional tablet type screen which i've mounted above the OE screen....this way i have all the OE functions like DAB and AA/carplay at the same time...

on my euro trips i use the tablet screen with AA for directions and the OE map screen for an overview where i am..ok the maps are only 2019 but all the main roads are there... ... - .- -.

For a more OEM look, this supplier on AE has sold 51 systems, and has some good reviews:

Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out! £221.92 38% Off | Android 12 Car Stereo Radio For Range Rover Sport L494 Vogue L405 2013-2017 Multimedia Player GPS Carplay AC Panel Touch Screen
https://a.aliexpress.com/_EyQaqfd

It just takes one brave soul…….. Whistle

I have bought loads of stuff from AE over the past 10 years, and very rarely had any issues, no more so than buying from any other online store.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say! Twisted Evil “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Hi Stan, yes I just meant to link to the VIKNAV shop rather than a specific item, these are not cheap, but you probably get what you pay for, and a lot less than Western suppliers. Does require a Herculean dose of bravery, tho’! Anyone? Whistle

I’m wondering whether it’s be possible to ditch the dual view screen which I never used and swap it with the higher resolution non dual view one. My pal has the non dual view and it’s much sharper and clearer. To me that would be enough of an upgrade at the moment. V8 or else ...

if you have the vents open then you do get some air as it bounces off the back of the tablet/unit and makes the 'flow' directional towards you [and passenger]...
the vent when open also keeps the tablet/unit cool ..

i dont miss the air as most of the time i have the vents closed . ... - .- -.

What about Range Rover Worlds stuff? People are happy with them I believe?

Far from cheap though.

Thanks for the prompt @Goodfella. I read your note and thought that I’d already looked into the RRW stuff and dismissed it.

Took another look yesterday and concluded that the reason I’d done so was that their promotional stuff majors on the iPad/L460 look however I did see that they do have an L405 upper screen only option (I’m not keen on the lower screen to replace the downstairs knobs, Matron).

I realise that the product may be relatively pricy, but would be really interested to hear of a real world owner review of the upper screen replacement.

If I’ve worked it out correctly, I think it’s this…. https://rangeroverworld.co.uk/shop/ols/pro...-2013-2016

Out of interest, what do they mean in their option choices by “Range Rover Touch pro duo steering wheel buttons”? Have I got these on a 2016AB? 2016 SDV8 AB
