Hydrogen conversion

Anyone have any experience with a hydrogen conversion, or heard any pros and cons from someone that's had it done?
If it does work could make a huge difference to running costs with diesel and petrol prices getting higher.
Northwest Hydrogen Conversions seemed to look like the most reputable after a quick 5 mins search on google. FFRR TD6 HSE

What are the costs for converting? How much is hydrogen and where are you going to get it? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

According to the site I was looking at conversions for a car such as a FFRR is £750-£850 depending on engine size. It just needs water to run!!!! They recommend bottled mineral water as it purer, and claim it can improve ecanomy by unto 50%! FFRR TD6 HSE

My perpetual motion machine should be on the market in less than 4 years, just got to figure out how to prevent it stopping every now and again.

I can't seem to find any long term test results or reviews by anyone of any professional standing in the automotive/scientific world - most of them are unsurprisingly from the people offering the kits!

All of the claims have no quantative information and are so general that i'm not really sure any of them can really be substantiated.

Not something i'd be sticking into a FFRR anyway - there's already too much that can go wrong!!

OK, some basic physics tells me it's a gimmick.

A device which takes water and turns it into the comonent parts of Hydrogen and Oxygen needs power to do this, supplied in this case electrically, from the car's alternator.

As we all know, energy cannot be created, neither can it be destroyed, it can be changed into a different kind of energy, a process which itself requires energy. None of these processes are 100% efficient so the equation is always more in than out. (loss making)

So, the electricity required to change the water into gases will exceed the extra energy produced by burning those gases in the engine unless I am mistaken.

If this were not the case, we would already have IC engines which ran on 100% water. We don't, mainly because the alternator required to produce that much gas would stall the engine driving it.

Willing to stand corrected .... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Dom.
