L405 4.4 as a farm vehicle

I currently have a L332 tdv8 as well as a v6 Amarok for the farm. I’ve always had a soft spot for the l322, this is my third.

I was wondering how tough are the L405 4.4? Would they stick the towing work on a farm? Say buying a 2015 with 80- 100k, and running it to 200-220k miles? At about 30k miles per year.

I’ve just always liked them, but don’t see many used on farms. I don’t really like pickups, or discovery’s.

I don't have a L405 but would if I had any reason to replace my MY12 4.4 TDV8 L322 that is my all-purpose vehicle including farm work, but I suggest that you find one with an e-diff. I retrofitted an e-diff because I didn't like the behaviour on muddy tracks compared with my previous 3.0 D4 that was ordered with an e-diff.

I think the DPF might not agree with farm travels, fine if you can drive a steady speed for a while to clear it out but pottering over tracks is not really ideal.
The 3.6 L322 is a brilliant farm truck tho. Very Happy

It would get plenty of towing and heavy work that should keep it cleared?

Towing 3.5t most days. Also would be used for 1000 mile trips with a 20ft trailer on.

It seems that city driving is what causes most of the DPF problems, regular long distance journeys will certainly keep your DPF clear.

....Plus you need to make sure that 2nd turbo kicks in frequently too, avoid a sticking valve!

I owned a L322 TDV8 before moving on the a L405 SDV8. On our farm we also have a Mitsubishi L200 and that is the go to for trailer work and mud plugging over the L405 because its a lower value car so it doesn't matter if it gets scratched and dinged. The L405 stands in fine when needed.

If I were you though I'd stick with L322's. They are boxier so I find easier to manoeuvre with trailers. They are also so cheap these days that you can have them as throw away cars when anything major goes wrong. I just feel that the L322 is a more rugged and durable machine than the L405 that took the marque more SUV school taxi.
