steering column motors

First post - go easy!

I've either a fried switch, loom, ecu or maybe all of the above (when I say fried, I mean actual burn scarring on the plastic and underside trim from a P.O.'s seat fire!) which is making the adjustment motors not work. However I need to extend the console right out as at the moment the runner is sitting over the bolts that need to come out/slacken to change the steering sensor.

From the wiring diagram I've got I can see the two motors have a permanent live and then a control wire. Does anyone know what is on that control wire to make the motor actually turn both ways? It's fed from the seat memory ECU so I'm wondering if it's actually a digital signal and there's another processor at the motor end which just isn't drawn??
