L322 5.0 SC 2011 - (viscous) fan very noisy?

Hi all

I am not mechanically minded, so pls be kind. My car went for its annual check today and it was noted that the engine cooling fan was v noisy. When driving it is very noticeable how noisy it is. Sounds like a jet engine and gets faster/louder with speed.

Would this be / does this appear to be the viscous fan, as I have had similar issues on a LR Defender, and I know they can fail?

I realise remote unseen diagnostics are not necessarily the best approach!

Thanks all the same.

Hi AJT, is it more of a pinging sound or like a stick in bike spoke? The fixed metal vanes at the back of the fan can be easily bent and then make contact with the rotating parts of the fan. They can also be easily bent back into shape with a stubby screwdriver. If this is the same problem, have a look down the back of the fan just forward of the attachment nut with a mirror. You will see any out of shape. 2011 L322 5.0L HSE & 2018 Discovery Sport 2.0L
