Recently I have noticed that when my TD6 has been standing a few hours it is slow to engage first gear after I start up. It goes like this: start engine, put in gear.... Nothing for a few seconds then the car drives off as usual. This only happens if i put the car into forward drive. The car will reverse immediately, but if I then put it into forward, it waits a couple of seconds before it drives off. Once the gearbox has warmed there is no other problem. Gear changes are smooth, sport mode fine, manual gear change fine. Everything is ok except if I leave it parked for several hours.

Any ideas?

Many years ago I had a Ford Consul Uto that was exactly like that. I ignored it and it was fine for the whole time I owned the car ( maybe 30,000 miles). But, it produced a lot less power than a Rangie, and was worth less than the cost of a pint of ATF!

My Audi A5 used to do this if left standing for a while but happened in reverse also really annoying.. It only had 20k miles on it.The dealer did not appear too concerned oh how I hated that A5. They said it was just a valve that sometimes slow to engage if left standing or something like that .Just dont be tempted to do any bank robberies Exclamation Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

An obvious first assumption is that this is a hydraulic issue (fluid viscous when cold, drained back into the sump overnight, etc.). However, the fact that reverse gear engages immediately points away from this.

Next, the forward and/or coast clutch could be leaking (possibly CF head ball valve sticking open, etc.) – but then why would the delay disappear when 1st gear is engaged manually?

This is why I’m wondering about the low clutch sprag – but even then, why would a mechanical friction device like this take time to ‘engage’ the first time from cold but then perform correctly the rest of the time (I assume you have no problems with 1st gear slipping once the initial engagement is out of the way)?

If it were the low clutch sprag that was faulty then a transmission rebuild would be necessary to replace it. It sounds from what the others are saying that you might be better off just trying to live with it.

OK guys, thanks for all the input. Maybe I will leave it for a while and save up my pennies for a rebuild eventually. I have learnt to live with it and have a suitable work around in the mornings.

The only problem I have had, was last week I stayed at a hotel with valet parking. I forgot to mention the problem. The poor guy eventually turned up in the morning with my car, saying he had been panicking why the car wouldnt run lol Td6 SE

There’s a guy over on Xoutpost.com http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-...sue-2.html who reckons he’s fixed his 1st gear engagement delay by replacing the fluid filter. Unlike in the 5HP24, where it’s held on by two screws, the 5L40-E filter is just a push fit into the seals in the suction port and he says that his came loose over time and dropped down into the sump.

I still don’t see why this wouldn’t affect reverse engagement too, or why selecting manual mode would circumvent the problem, but at least I suppose it’s a fairly easy/cheap thing to check?

That could be interesting. As I had the filter and fluid changed about 2000 miles ago. Maybe the new filter has slipped out. Td6 SE

My td6 box has just gone.
Symptoms:slight hestitaion to select correct gear at low throttle openings 45mph approx
Slow pick up from cold in drive and reverse, to the point of rolling back when on an incline.
When it finally went transmission failsafe message on computer and high revs for very little drive, managed to limp home.
2003 TD6, 98K, gearbox fluid changed 12 months ago when I bought the vehicle.

Strange thing! The last few weeks the car is fine.

A few weeks ago I went away for four days without my car. When I got back home I got into my car and it drove away immediately. Ever since then it has behaved fine every morning.

Stange eh?! Td6 SE

If its not used in manual mode maybe try flicking it into sport and then 1st and drive that way or a mile or two and then slot it back into Drive for the rest of the trip??

M90 Its worth having your gear box oil drained, and having a new filter.

Although that said,it made no difference to mine,so the rebuild had to be done.

The joys of owning a Range. Thumbs Up
