Slow to engage first gear in morning.

Recently I have noticed that when my TD6 has been standing a few hours it is slow to engage first gear after I start up. It goes like this: start engine, put in gear.... Nothing for a few seconds then the car drives off as usual. This only happens if i put the car into forward drive. The car will reverse immediately, but if I then put it into forward, it waits a couple of seconds before it drives off. Once the gearbox has warmed there is no other problem. Gear changes are smooth, sport mode fine, manual gear change fine. Everything is ok except if I leave it parked for several hours.

Any ideas? No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Further to my post. Transmission fluid and filter were changed about 2,000 miles ago, so I assume it was filled correctly. Mileage 94,000. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

We have had experience of boxes not being filled correctly and failing quickly soon after! Also boxes which have not been saved in time, by changing the oil and have failed soon after... Sorry!!!

Gearbox knackered..

This is a classic symptom of impending doom.

Start looking for a gearbox specialist, ASAP

But unfortunately for Mikey, I have to agree with Paul (though he didn't need to rub it in by repeating it Razz ).
This is a TD6 - and a classic symptom. Though it doesn't have to be in 2000 miles - could go another 10+k.

As of a certain point, it's better to leave the old fluid than have it changed. Having the fluid changed actually seems to speed the gearboxes demise Crying or Very sad But - how do you know if you've reached that point?

Do follow Craig's advice and have the fluid level checked. Needs to be checked at the proper temp with a T4 or an infrared thermometer!

Ok guys. Further to my original post, I just havent had the time to get it looked at recently, also due to various commitments I don't have the ready cash to pay for a major outlay such as a possible new gearbox.

So, I'm trying to find further info. As to what the actual problem is and how likely it is to suddenly go "bang" lol

At present the delay in pulling away from cold, depends on how long the car has been standing. If the car is not used for only a few hours, there is no problem. If it's left overnight there is a delay of 10 seconds plus before the car pulls away. The car will go into reverse immediately though. Also if I use manual gears it works straight away. Once running i can put it straight onto normal drive, the gear changes gear smoothly with no hassle. Acceleration is also smooth with no lumpiness.

Now I don't understand how auto boxes work, but it's almost as if the ATF drains slowly onto the sump when stationary. The longer it is standing the more fluid drains out, therefore the car needs more time to pump fluid back into the box (is this how it works?). Why does it work instantly if gears are selected manually.

I dont do many miles lately in the FF and I have another car if needed. So what I really want to know is, how safe is it to use the car before I get it sorted out. Will the problem just get worse gradually or will it suddenly pack in maybe miles from home.

I wouldn't normally neglect things like this but due to my employment, I can't risk any major expenses for a few months. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

The difference between engaging Manual 1st and Drive 1st is the low & reverse clutch is engaged in ‘manual’ which bypasses the low clutch sprag (to provide overrun braking). This could indicate that you have a problem with the low clutch sprag.

Thanks for that info. If that turns out to be the problem, how expensive is something like that going to cost? Is it likely to fail suddenly or last a little while? Hi mike, can't help with the cost but mine has done this since I've had(18mnths) it, had the oil changed ect but no difference at all, I've done over 60k like this but as im aware of it I don't rev it in the morning but just let it drop in gear, can take 30 to40 seconds when cold, its ok when its hot. Reckon it would go downhill quick if i tried to pull away before it went in in the mornings. Im sure it will tell me when it needs attention. Its never got any worse in the last 60k klms

mikey , mine does that if its been standing for a few days, its no problem , all you do is fire up the range , adjust the radio volume to suit, adjust heat/cold/fan to required settings,put on seatbelt, stick your finger in your ear take out and see what's on the end of it, look into reverse mirror and tell yourself your a lucky git to have a range, and by the time you've done all that the auto box would be ready for 'drive' engagement... Very Happy ... - .- -.
