*** PLEASE READ - abuse of QUOTE button ***

would members please stop using the "quote" button as a "reply" button, it adds a lot of overhead to the forum database when you just mean to reply to the last post in a thread.

any un-neccessary 'quotes' spotted will be delightfully deleted

Just change the permissions on the SQL database so it's not visible to the abuses or name and shame Smile

Is there a problem with free disk space or something? I've never seen any forum I've used before initiate such a rule.

There's not a problem with disk space at all, but constantly reading the same message over and over again due to the incorrect use of the quote button is a little tiresome.

So it's a readability request Smile

That it stores the messages in the database multiple times is a side issue.

Can't say I struggle with it myself but it seemed a bit of an odd request as originally presented.

If I quote someone I do it so that it is clear who I am replying to. I might still do that even if it is to the poster above me as posts sometimes cross. If the quote is deleted the context may be lost.

I already had one deleted earlier. Seemed a bit pointless when it was only one line of text quoted. I can understand it if everyone keeps quoting the same 300 line posting full of images.

I suppose I'll just quote when I want to and let scarey do the tidying up Whistle

Generally, the quote button is not necessary, although I completely accept that in some threads it is necessary.

You'll notice that it's not a ban on using the quote button (otherwise I'd take it away!), but just to ask everyone to think about how it's used, as it's being over-used as a "reply" button.

here's my 2 pence worth......
you read a post and you want to make a comment , if its a reply to the most recent post then you use the reply button if its several posts up then you use the quote button...
you might also want to make a comment re a specific word or sentence, then you just quote that ...
its good to see that most members have embraced this proper forum etiquette...
and yes i do 'tidy up' as i have done with the stickys and the wiki , hopefully this will make reading the forum more enjoyable.. ... - .- -.
