Cars without a Temperature Gauge!

Makes me feel very uncomfortable, if its one thing I rely on when driving is the ability to regularly check that the coolant temperature is OK.

My daughters Ford KA doesn't have one, but I was surprised whilst using a BMW 330d Coupe (2011) that it didn't show coolant temperature by default (haven't bothered to fiddle with display settings as its on hire and going back tomorrow - anyway don't like it !)

What do you think, or what couldn't you live without on your dash?

Jaguar XF doesn't have one. Not a real issue for me. SWMBO wouldn't know what it was so she would keep driving and I can smell boiling coolant so I can live without it. Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.

It was only with the Puma engined Defender that the Def got a rev counter, but it also got a speed limiter at 82mph along with it! Now the engine has been downsized to a 2.2 from a 2.4 for Euro6 regs LR has also upped the max speed to 96mph!
Must admit I have never felt the need for a rev counter in my 300Tdi - you know all too well when the engine has stopped and it runs out of steam long before it runs out of revs! 2012MY RREvoque Dynamic Lux Plus Auto SD4 Coupe in Fuji White with full ebony interior

My mates 106 diesel doesn't have one, just relies on a bulb to let you know you've cooked the engine.

Quite risky when it's French reliability Laughing

Is it due to dual stage thermostats why some cars don't seem to have a temp. gauge or just cost cutting? 2006 Mercedes CLS

all you need is a speedo and fuel gauge, dont need a rev counter [whats it for?] or a temp gauge...best to have warning lights in the background though.. ..............................

this is handy Wink

I think having an instant MPG display on all cars would help reduce fuel consumption somewhat as people just by default try and make it as low as possible, and then start to realise that they can actually make it higher and better and thus improve their driving and reading the road ahead skills Smile

ive had french cars for years and always had a temp gauge though not much use when the thing climbs faster than the speedo Very Happy

i like the idea of an instant mpg readout, i wonder if the FFRR mpg readout frequency could be made to be more frequent.. ..............................

Well this BMW 330d (without a temperature gauge) has this instant mpg dial thing, bloody distracting especially in traffic as it winged its way from one end of the range to the other either below 16mpg or above 80mpg, only really of use when doing a set speed - perhaps just a bit too sensitive.

But this is my point - we know how we are driving on the Ayrton Senna < -- > Grandad scale, but we don't know if our engine is running at a happy temperature (above or below 90 degrees). Take Mick's thread last month about the temp gauge not quite reaching normal, this may just be a glitch, because it clears itself, but it could provide the indicator for a fault should one occur. Having just an overheat light doesn't cut it for me.

Anyway, good news BMW gone and Audi A4 Cab back (with temp gauge Wink), thank God. Hang onto yours Antonia's Dad, you'll regret selling it Wink

Evoque has a C O2 emissions graph and readout come up on the dash when the cruise control is engaged.......... lasts about 5 seconds and then disappears until the next time you resume or engage the cruise. Gimmick, I've switched it off, at least it can be disabled in the dash options! 2012MY RREvoque Dynamic Lux Plus Auto SD4 Coupe in Fuji White with full ebony interior

I understand what you mean Joe, without the guage one couldnt tell if a thermostat was sticking a little, ie closed and getting a bit overhot then dropping, or sticking a little open and never ever getting to temp.

Much a common fault on cars as they get older speaking from experience Sad
