There is another thread on the forum and there was a lady on there that was quite "vocal" about which product to use (Gliptone) and why. Based on her insistence I did a bit of googling as well and found that what she said made sense and was backed up by a lot of user reviews.

Now it is obvious that leather is also developing with the use of modern chemicals and it seems that we now have to be careful what type of leather is in our cars and how to treat it. As I said before Gliptone definitely "saved" my seats so no reason for me to stop using it or change to another product.

To make things a bit more complicated, I have a tailor made motorbike suit (leather of course) from the major supplier of racing suits in the Netherlands. They told me to only use beeswax based leather grease on the suit and not the leather conditioners used for car leather as it weakens the leather and could therefore not protect as well during a crash. These guys have been making motorbike suits for decades and seem to do very well.

For my specially made leather bike saddle (Streetfighter conversion) I got a Meguire product to treat it that I was NOT to be used on the suit. The saddle was done by car and bike upholstery specialists in the Netherlands. So again different types of leather needing different types of conditioning.

To me it sounds that both "camps" are right when they are talking about a specific type of leather, so to me it sounds like each of us needs to find out which type of leather is in their car and then find out which product is the best to use.

Now that that is sorted I'm off to think some more about leather.

There's no magic, or anything much special, about the leather in a Range Rover. The SE and Autobiography "semi-aniline" is also a surface-coated leather.

The only mainstream modern car leather I'm aware of which isn't coated is the stuff in the US Ford F150 King Ranch pick-ups.

As for Gliptone, the advice on their website is unclear but even they admit that their "conditioner" can't penetrate new leather.

I seriously couldn't give a hooch about my RR seats - I DO want to treat her leather tho!

Back when I was growing up in Wash DC, there was a DJ on the radio who would've said something along the lines of: Yeah, I got'cher leather conditioner right here. Right HERE! Pffft........Pfft.....PfftPfftPfft.
