Creaking and groaning when turning steering

Ive got a creaking groaning noise from front of rrover when turning the steering wheel. It only does it when parked and seems to be when the steering is working hard. if i roll slightly at same time it does not make any noise and no noises when driving over bumps etc. It is not a power steering noise but can be felt through the wheel. It sounds like a dry ball joint or the bearing on top of the front strut. Has anyone else come across this problem ? Thought I would ask before pulling it in bits Thanks

Hmm, first things first, don't discount a steering issue.

Check your PAS fluid levels, have they dropped? Keep checking it. I had this once and it was a split PAS pipe leaking, the engine bay and undertray hide PAS leaks well too so you might not notice an oil leak.

Range Rovers do groan under load, especially slow manoeuvring whilst using the brakes (I actually quite like the groans, makes it seem alive somehow).

Is there a grinding noise? Do you feel it in the steering wheel? THE INVENTOR OF THE TERM "FULL-FAT RANGE ROVER" :

Its not a pump or pipe issue. pas is working fine. Its a clunking groan which can be felt through the steering. At 1 mph and above it does not do it at all. I think its a dry ball joint or the top strut bearing. I have replaced the front lower arms in the last year and the rear lower arm rubber bushes and checked all the lower ball joints. Is the strut top bearing a sealed unit? I'm going to get the misses to turn the steering lock to lock while Im under it tomorrow and See whats going on.
