Loss of power and missfire on SC

Driving to work this morning I experienced a total loss of power from my FF. Happily cruising at about 75mph and suddenly dropped back to 25mph. I managed to get off the dual caraigeway where it completely cut out. I restarted it and it was running badly so i phoned the RAC. Turned out to be only firing on 7. He had a look over it and restarted it a few times and it eventually sterted firing on all 8. His code reader came up with the following codes:

P0301
P0316
P0087
P0088

As it was low on fuel I went to the filling station a few miles away and filled her up and she seems to be running ok now. He suggested that as the fuel was low some air may have got into the fuel system and caused the missfire. The fuel gauge was giving a range of 65 miles so about 4 gallons.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the codes are and if this is a plausible reason. I'm hoping its nothing more sinister!

Thanks
Nick

I had a similar though less severe experience recently whilst very low on fuel, just power loss on motorway, no eml, and was fine after I filled up! Thumbs Up 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

My M5 was continually going into limp home mode and being trailered back to the dealer, eventually it was diagnosed as being the MAF Mass Airflow sensors, in others words the oxygen sensors, they were replaced and it was like getting a different car in terms of the power, it released the full might of the 5.0 V8 which had been running poorly before.

The EML came on when i restarted and also a message saying the engine was running on reduced power. After filling up, the EML had gone off and there were no warning messages.

Thanks for the info guys. Thumbs Up

It seems similar to the problem Dan had in his. I have done about 100 miles since and have had no problems with the tank full. I will run the fuel low again next week and see what happens.

You VERY probably have a dodgy fuel pump as those are the exact 4.2 SC symptoms I suffered and Dan suffered when the fuel pump cannot "Jet" fuel from one side of the bottom of the tank to the other! Normally happens with about 65 miles to empty indicated.....

You have fuel in the right side of tank but pump can use it.

The error codes are as above.......

You need a new pump so buy one fron Dan at Duckworths and get it fitted at an Indy. Total cost about £400 but TOTAL fix. Thumbs Up

PS: It a very common problem on the SC but seemingly not on other models.

Mick we have a theory that involves ESP and a pressure washer.... Discovery 4 HSE

Mick - As Adam says its slightly suspicious that they had the car for over a week to fix the cold start squeak and reverse camera, and the day after I pick it up I had this problem.

Will be putting 450 miles on her over the weekend so will see how we get on. (will be keeping the tank well topped up though!)
