I'll check RAVE over the next few days and see what it quotes but can't imagine its a big job, probably 2 spanners on the haynes scale

There is nothing in the RAVE on repairing the FBH. I just posted most of the relevant info in the 'Have I got an FBH' thread in general.

Graham, here are the relevant tech docs in English. Don't be put off if it looks like a lot. It is a rather simple device. You just have to weed through the irrelevant info first.

From my past experience here is a list of most common FBH problems (though my experience is based on the older generation of FBH. Should be close to the same):
- bad glow plug (continuity test)
- bad thermal overload breaker (continuity test)
- improper fuel mixture (the mixture is metered by both the fuel pump (precise 'dosage-pump') and the combustion air pump).
- thermal overload due to bad coolant pump

In the first 2 cases the FBH will not even try to run whereas in the latter 2 it will start and shut down without producing any heat.

I'd also contact Webasto and ask who does their FBH repairs in the UK. Here on the mainland it's all Bosch Service Centers (amongst others).

Right. Bit of good news...

I had Webasto take a look at the fault codes etc; their diagnosis is a faulty ECU or faulty car signalling. As a result, Lookers have done more diagnosis and concluded it has to be the ECU, so Warranty Direct guys have accepted responsibility, and the car's now booked in to have a new heater fitted... costs covered by WD.

I'm glad you're getting this sorted. It was the ECU that failed on mine too. I spent a lot of money in determining this so my advise to anyone experiencing problems with FBH is to just get a new or scrap one..... Saves a lot of titting about!

When mine stopped working I had the fault codes read (£90) and was informed it was the glow pin down to earth so i removed it from the car to get overhauled at local webasto man. He replaced the combustor, de-coked and tested it (£350). He did say that he was unable to test the ECU as this was not a generic Webasto ECU. When fitted back onto the car it still didn't work, so because I couldn't hear the fuel pump I bought a new one (£45). New fuel pump fitted and the bloody thing still didn't work.

Getting really frustrated, I bought another unit from a breakers (£70), gave it an overhaul with the new parts from the duff FBH, refitted to car and hey presto it fired first time. It did shut down after a couple of minutes, but on the third attempt it ran for the full 30 minutes and has run when ever its been called for ever since.

One thing that I have noted since playing around with this is that when I use the remote to operate the FBH it only heats the cabin...... Not the engine. Don't know how it operates below 5c when called for automatically.

That's my story anyway.

Hi Boffhead, is it a big job removing the unit?Mine needs looking at and ceratainly not going to main dealers. Mine does not seem to be firing at all. I am going to do the disconnect the battery for 10secs to see if this does a reset but failing that it will need to come out.

Removal looks reasonably straightforward (instructions posted on another thread somewhere), but once it's out you've got coolant pipes and a fuel pipe to worry about if you want to use the car.

CAV Automotive in Preston do a service, I rang them up - very helpful, but as boffhead says the ECU isn't part of their service.

SteveMfr you do seem to have an excellant knowldge of the FBH unit but mine is quite puzzling.

On my touchscreen i have the timed climate which states on it 30 minutes of venting or heating and you can set two diffrenet times in the one day, i also have a manual softkey. When i set it to timed you can hear the fans power on but FBH (when temp below 16C, as above it vents only?) when i select the manual softkey nothing happens not even fans.

Howvever i know that the FBH is working as yesterday it was cold first thing in Cardiff and when i started the car i heared the familiar noise on left on side (sounds like a bee farting!!) so i opened the bonnett and could hear the FBH starting up and then the jet turbine sound along with exhaust fumes.

So kit works when the engine is on and at 5c or below but not when selected via timed or manually? Can anyone help solve this little issue for me? Dont really want to go to dealer as we do not exactly see eye to eye.

I have also a problem with the FBH fitted in my Disco 4 SDV6 ( bought 2 months ago). I can activate it either
from the touch screen or via the RC, it starts 'normally" but automatically shuts down after 4 or 5 minutes without having heated anything inside the car. On my case I suspect a battery discharge problem, it is like if it was the disco that would stop the Webasto, to prevent an excessive discharge of the battery. In fact when I turn on the engine after a heating failure, I get a message on the screen "timed climate not available, please check your fuel level ( which is ok) battery charge may be low " . During one of the attemps after another faulty FBH start, I even once got the red battery light on the dashboard and could not start the engine at all, I turned off all auxilliary equipments and this allowed me to start the engine. To me the battery is not powerfull enough to supply the heater during its operation ( or does not charge properly ? ). Does anyone ever experienced the same problem ?
