Cracking the nuts!

Thought the title sounded a bit Christmassy, well the content isn't Whistle

I want to change the wheels on my RR, you've mostly had a laugh at the wheels in the garden next to the primrose w.c. but I was going to fit them last weekend but couldn't get the old ones off. I bought a Metabo Air wrench - wouldn't budge the wheel nuts, have ordered a 750mm breaker bar and so hope that will do the trick. I was going to tighten back up with the air wrench as it's stated torque is more than enough and coat pretty much everything with copper grease to avoid a repeat in the future.
I'm sure i ain't the first with this problem, has anyone got any advice they might like to share. i don't want to take the car to the tyre shop as they will gun things up too tight again, might scratch the wheels and probably won't put the wheels on the right corners. Geoff

Try tightening them instead to crack them or whack a hammer on each one to help real the metal-metal bond Smile

I never use to use a breaker bar, just a normal heavy DIY ratchet and a 4' long tent pole(wooden from a Niger) and use that. It was undefeated lol

I've never seen a wheel nut that an air wrench couldn't undo. How much air pressure are you using? Crank it up a bit maybe?

Take the car to Kwikfit and they will loosen them for you.
Then tighten them yourself for the journey home.
Had the same problem initially on my Disco, even the "big" guys at Kwikfit had trouble. Smile
Best few pounds ever.

Torque wrench is the safest way to tighten them up

Just take care with the breaker bar, cheap ones tend to snap and when they do it can hurt Big Cry

I'm getting more concerned with every post - in a sort of "can you feel the force" sort of way.

That is - the sort of force I'm gonna be needing to crack my nuts Twisted Evil Geoff

Scotland 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Java Black

get a good 1/2" drive impack socket, 24" 1/2" drive bar (not ratchet or torque wrench) and 5lb lump hammer

Pyt the socket and bar on your wheel nuts and then give the end of the bar a good hard whack with the lump hammer, nuts will release easily.

As already stated when you put the wheels back on always use a torque wrench otherwise you will end up with the problem you have now. 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

I recently removed a wheel from a Omega, the nuts were so tight a 4 foot scaffold pole bent trying to undo them

If it's a new air gun then it will need a little use 1st to get it up to full impact, same if you've not used it for a while.
