Steering column woes.

So went to Carfest this weekend, and when I went to leave my steering wheel was as low as it could go almost touching the seat. I thought one of my mates had messed about with it when they'd gone to get beers from the car, but they all swear they never touched it.

Anyway, the wheel will go in and out without any problems, but it won't go up or down at all. Anyone know if the up / down motor is the same one as the in / out one?

I just about managed to slide my legs underneath the wheel to drive home, but I need to get it sorted.

I've got a feeling this could be expensive... Big Cry Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...

Not an expert, but I remember something about them sometimes running off the end of the threads at the extremes ? Though if you've not been moving it about, is a long shot.... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

It happened to me a few weeks a go if you undo the 3 Torx screws and remove the steering colum surround and on the right hand side of the colum you will see a 13 mm nut on the end of a threaded spindle you can manually wind it back up with that. Mine played up for the rest of the journey towing my caravan and have put it down to the old voltage issue as I have since taken the battery off charged it up and has not happened since
Good luck
Roger

And once again FFRR.com saves the day! Bow down

Thanks for your comments guys, I did what RCusden suggested and it worked.

Well it worked in the end. It was all very weird.

I adjusted the nut to lift the steering wheel. Then when I tested it, in and out was still fine, but any up or down input and the wheel would only go downwards. So I took the key out and of course the 'easy exit' feature kicked in but rather than lift the wheel up it ploughed it downwards into the seat and the electric motor just kept running.

I guess this must be what happened initially - the easy exit feature somehow kicked in in reverse?!

Anyway, I touched the lever to see if another input would stop the electric motor. It did. And then suddenly everything was working ok again, up was back to being up and down was back to being down.

Weird?! Shocked

Anyway, I've run through a few start / stop cycles and everything seems to be working as designed again, including the easy exit feature.

All very strange. I just hope this is a one off and not the start of me experiencing the infamous FFRR electrical gremlins that so far I've managed to avoid. Fingers crossed! Rolling Eyes Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...

Interested to read this. I've had exactly the same problem, on & off, for maybe the last 18 months or so.

Every now and then I get in the car, switch on and the wheel drops to its lowest position. I usually find that if I switch off and wait for the steering column motor to stop whirring I can then send it back up. The weird thing is that it will then do it every time for the next 5/6 starts and then mysteriously go away - often for months. Consequently I've never sought a permanent fix.

Tonight, for the first time, I couldn't get the column back up, no matter how hard and how many times I tried. In the end I had to drive 75 miles home with the wheel in my lap! When I got home I tried again with the spare key and got the wheel back up, but I don't know if the key made the difference or not, as I also adjusted the wheel back to its nearest the dash setting before I tried to send it back up. It might have been that making the difference.

I think this is an electrical gremlin, rather than a mechanical issue. I changed the battery at last service becasue I wondered if that was causing the fault, but it's still there.

Any one else experienced this?

Mine did exactly this when I got the car back from its warranty work a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't get the steering column to move up at all, it was sitting on my lap! (I have the seat up high so that I can see out...) So I went to speak to the service advisor, and while I was out of the car (all of 2 minutes) it adjusted itself to its normal height, all on its own. But it still wouldn't move up or down on command, so she drove it back into the workshop, where they waved a magic wand over it (or something...) and it came out all working correctly five minutes later.

Come to think of it, they never did tell me what they'd done to it. I suspected at the time that they'd disconnected the battery at some point during the repairs and they'd just reset everything, but I don't know. It's not done it since, anyway. I'm 100% certain it was an electrical problem though, because they wouldn't have been able to do any kind of mechanical repair in the five minutes it was out of my sight.

Mine was messing about so I used the IDTool to disable easy entry/exit stays put now and I can move it if I need to as the stalk still controls it. Geoff

Took cover off and found a washer, metal piece (seems like its broken off something) and what appears to be a squarish nut. Please tell me where these could come from.

I've disconnected the motor for the up and down movement of steering column and it now stays where I've set it

Sounds like limit switch or encoder issue. I suggest to find all the electrical connectors, take them off, spray them with contact cleaner. Any limit switches, same thing. Spray the switches themselves and also lubricate the threads of the adjustment screws (may additional friction plays a role).

Good luck with the gremlin hunt Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!
