I got some reading to do and then will start putting everything apart and cleaning.

Nice powertrain you have on your 101 Myvatn.

Given the sand, rather than jumping in at the deep end, I would take the tops off the carbs, check the diaphragms and give the pistons and the chamber they slide in a really good clean with carb cleaner ( or petrol )

The put it back together top up the damper chamber with the right oil and see how that goes. V8 or else.
