Well there you go - I knew the tow balls were different as I have both for different trailers - but I didn't realise the armatures were too.

In case there is anyone else with an american trailer & a RR, I got an adapter from Wattling so that I could use a 2" ball on a drop plate tow bar. The 50mm ball was OK but did chatter a bit.
