Just a quick question noticed this on Friday (smell - temp around -1 up here if that makes any issue) evening but was away over weekend so did not get to drive car until this morning. Car is driving fine but when I pulled up into the car park, opened window down to put pass into barrier noticed a slight creaking sound as the car was driving up the two floors got out could smell a burning smell - got out the car the smell is not too smelly on the outside fairly subtle but there. Had a quick look at forums on Sat checked all the wheels today and noticed significantly more heat coming from the rear right wheel. Could it be a stuck caliper - car is not pulling to one side I don't think and seems to be coming to a stop and coasting normally. Im going to do more of a thorough check at lunch anything to look out for? its a 56/2007 SE?

Hi mate, sounds like the sticking caliper problem. Several of the S/C owners (including myself) have had it, have a look in the recent posts/search. The rear brake calipers seem prone to it. I have had both rear calipers replaced (cost of calipers about 70 Euro each), labor here is cheap.

There are several posts on this issue. Suggest to go to your local dealer/indy to check and change out quickly. Also get the brake fluid changes maybe. If you are handy, you can easily do it yourself (I did heaps of them on the old junkers that I used to drive but don't have tools nor time here ;().

Most cars don't pull and the issue gets worse when driving longer (did on mine) and it started "juddering" a bit (as the brake was grabbing more/less/more/less).

Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Supermario - I posted a thread last week. Had my rear drivers side caliper replaced on Friday at an independant specialist. £75 plus vat for the caliper and £50 labour.

Thanks Rich. I checked it at lunch only did a 1 mile drive and now it seems fine no burning smell - maybe needs a longer drive? Ill check again when I go home thats a 4 mile drive. If it does seem fine should i bother getting fixed or will it happen again possibly in the future?

Had 'extra heat' and intermittent gentle squealing sound from offside rear a couple of months ago.

Definitely sticking calliper. Had it changed at an Independent immediately before it did too much damage to the disc. Cost was about the same as Rich_959. Car had done about 65k and is also a 56/2007 MY. Guess it is just about old enough now for these things to be expected!

Wouldn't hang around too long before sorting it out though, even if it is intermittent; no point adding new disc and pads to the bill!! -----------------------------------------------

Thanks guys. Took it to the dealers they are reccommending pad change although they said they are fine!

How does pad change stop the caliper sticking? 

Agree with47p2. Can't see why putting new pads on is going to cure a sticking calliper!

Perhaps taking the old ones out, giving everything a clear out and then re-fitting, but can't see why new pads are needed.

Once the caliper starts sticking it will progressively get worse.
Best change the caliper and that's the job done.

Or maybe the dealer is thinking of his profits, change pads, ££, change caliper £££  

Sorry should of said do a caliper change and recommend a pad change. Said teh pads seem fine but they have been heating up bad and could have cracks

Its what I call a B class bug.

A Class - Car needs fixing asap does not work
B Class - Car needs attention drives but should be fixed sharpish
C Class - minor-ish issue - car still works fine though such as my alarm bonnet switch
D Class - shut up thats not an issue - my CD player not working but on a restart being fine.

Sorry i'm being pedantic now and voicing my inner workings.

Difficult to say from the pictures, try running your finger tip over the shiny surface and off the outer edge and feel for a slight lip at the edge
