Help! Fuel inject system error!!!

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone would have some info that could help me before spending more cash.

I have a 2002 RR Vogue TD6 and I have just paid £1848 on a gearbox rebuild. Since getting it back yesterday, I was driving home and the engine just cut out whilst driving and the Fuel Inject. System error message displayed. I managed to get onto a side road and then tried to fire her up but to no avail. Just to let you know as well, I had about 20 miles left of fuel in the tank so I was running very low on fuel. After about 10-15 minutes, she fired up and I drove a mile to the fuel station and topped her up, turned on the ignition, fired up straight away and the message had switch off! Lovely! Then, on the way in to work this morning, again, the fuel warning light came on and with 50 miles in the tank and 10 mins later she cut out whilst driving again and the exact same scenario occured. Waited for 10 mins and she fired up again, off to the fuel station, fill up, message gone, car runs fine.

This didnt used to happen prior to having my gearbox rebuilt and no doubt it's probably not related but why is this happening? I used to be able to run the fuel down to at least 20 miles or so on the range meter with no problems. Is it just that they dont like going low on fuel or do I have a problem?

Sorry for the long thread but any info or things to check myself would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

Hey scarey, youre right mate and my gearbox still slips and jerks even after everything so could be related to bad workmanship!
47p2 I'll probably give that a go too. It's just weird because as soon as there is enough fuel in tank that's more than the reserve, she starts and drives absolutely fine, real smooth with no problems.

Gonna speak to the garage that worked on it on Monday and then I'll let you know what happens!

Thanks for both your feedback! Wink

Hi noddy5vogue

Thats not good to hear. Have you had it diagnosed as being faulty pumps or are you just going through a process of elimination? Let me know if it resolves your problem.

Good luck!

Its possible that the silt in the tank has become dislodged or, the filter in tank is partially clagged but when the tank is full or over such an amount the fuel goes above this blockage line and thus gets thru.

You need to get the faults read to see which pump is causing the issue Smile

If you have access to a Testbook, Faultmate orautologic they can usually tell you what pressure is being seen from which pump and generating the fault.

Gearbox still iffy... Deffo go back and get it sorted and ask what they did. If they replaced the valve block(common fault IIRC) then a Sonnax one is the best route instead of a refurb and a new TC should go on at the same time. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Hi Kingpleb

Thanks for the information I will try that to get it sorted.

As far as the gearbox goes, I'm going to take it back tomorrow so hopefully they can get it sorted once and for all.

Thanks again for the info!

Good Morning everyone

Just a quick update with regards to the fuel inject problem.

It doesn't seem to be related to the amount of fuel thats in the car although I had just under a quarter and it cut out on the way in this morning. Lots of spluttering prior to engine cut out and so I managed to pull over, waited a few minutes and cranked it over. The engine just about started and spluttered until it cut out almost instantly. Waited another 5 minutes or so and eventually it started and then I was able to finish my journey to work which was about 15 miles with faultless driving!

This is just strange!

Good morning!

I know what the problem is. I have just broken down now and was able to pop the bonnet before she cut out and looking at the fuel line coming from the filter, it was full of foamy air bubbles so I gather that air is getting in to the system. Does that mean a new pump?

Could be an air leak in the system at one of the joints but more possibly a faulty pump, the secondary pump being the most common to give problems

Hi everyone and 47p2.

This is what happened after today's events.

Managed to get towed by my dad to his place after an unsuccessful firing of the ignition. It was clear that air was in the fuel system as you could see nothing but bubbles flowing through the clear pipe coming off the fuel filter. So anyway, got into the garage and removed both inlet and out pipes from the filter. Upon switching on the ignition, there was plenty of pressure pushing the fuel out of the inlet pipe (to fuel filter) so it seems that it's being pumped upto the engine no problem. (I hope) So I bypassed the filter and connected the two rubber pipes together and hey, the car started up so I got a new fuel filter and put that on. I also noticed that the fuel pipe that is attached to the engine had a loose jubilee clip so replaced that too. I cut open the old fuel filter and it was pretty caked in gunk and nastiness so I am hoping that this, as well as some air getting through possibly through the old filter caused the problem. I have now covered about 40 miles today with no problems which has not happened once since the problem started as the car was breaking down every 20 miles or so. Fingers crossed is all I can say. I'll keep the thread posted with any further info.

Thanks to everyone who has left feedback.

Hi Mikeyjd! Cheers mate.

Let's hope that it stays that way.

The gearbox is still slipping and the guy that done it has told me to drive it for 500 miles and then take it back to check the oil but I will demonstrate it to him and make sure he gets it sorted. It's really annoying as it just won't go up a hill without slipping and I know that it's not dropping a gear as I test it in the manual mode and you can literally feel it under your feet!!! It even happens on level roads!! Gotta get it sorted!

What symptoms did you have before you had the gearbox rebuilt? I'm just curious as I have a 2003 td6 and it's starting to show possible gearbox problems. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE
