I've been through this recently... as has been said above the only way of knowing is to take off the trim. Mine car looked OK no sign of any rust.. but underneath the trim I was greater with this.

My missus is also Irish, im English and I wouldn't be use to the roads over here, one day theyre flooded, then mud and rocks, cows, sheep, tractors, your car would be in bits..!  |

It was the Bluetooth module, I did the pen and tape and it came straight on.
Its a bit odd though as it was fine until the welding was done, maybe it had something to do with the battery im not sure ... |
