My concerns with the TDV8 were the potential repair costs would rapidly out weigh the fuel savings should anything go wrong.

Sounds like the box preselected gears as you are decelerating.
Hard to say without seeing it but if you are breaking sharply it will probably try and select a lower gear to help with the decelerat ... |
