Am still a little confused. Does that mean the earlier ones will fit my car as its a 2005 car even though the chassis number starts 06?

Both types of mudflap will fit your car... Land Rover only changed the design with the facelift, not the fitment...

I can only presume the early type were too stiff in off road use and could therefore damage the bodywork, hence the newer type being far more flexible (and slimmer/more modern looking)
