Stan, I don't think anybody has any problem with you or anybody being a moderator.

For what its worth I think you do a very good job there are rather a lot of posts being shifted though, but then I am far from perfect - so thats just life

I can't comment on the sheep though - didn't see it was she pretty

I'm not sure I really care about moving them but the location is often in the eye of the beholder.

I recently posted on Bentley showing their 4x4 concept at the Geneva Motor Show.

It could have gone in:
* The L405 forum
Pro: if we're talking about new models, perhaps most interesting as a comparison there as it will only ever compete directly with the L405
Con: it's not about the L405
* The Off-Topic forum
Pro: not about L322
Con: Off topic has become something that has almost no relation to cars or 4x4s and someone thinking about next gen 4x4 is not likely to look there.
* The General forum
Pro: it is an interesting yardstick for L322 owners when thinking about where they go next
Con: not directly about L322

In the end I went with General and it got moved to Off-Topic.

On other forums, there are redirection notices that posts have been moved. So I sometimes put it into one of the places that might find it interesting and then move it to a better place. That way it is easy to find.

when i move a post/thread to another section i have a ''leave shadow topic in old forum'' option which 9 times out of 10 i do..this is so the OP can come back and follow his post to the new section..

i have the un-envyable task of deciding where to move posts ,if they need moving that is..this is why i have placed a ''posting in the correct section'' topic so posters can think about whether general is the right section for their post.. ... - .- -.

I think the issue, Stan, is trying to second guess where you feel is the right place.

As Emperor rightly said, that Bentley thread was suitable in any one of three areas. It's just that his guess didn't match yours, and so it was moved. But, in truth, the subject was ambiguous and it didn't really need moving as it was an equal 3-way decision.

I'm not dissing your decision making. You rightly say that your job is unenviable, but please don't make it harder than it is. We're a decent bunch and all pretty mature. Surely, giving us a bit of a nod on some occasions is just part of that collaborative approach?

From the short time I've spent here, one thing is clear. The constant redirection notices and not the actual movement is the thing that irks me. I also jointly run another LR forum and hate these notices. So I move stuff and maybe leave a notice for a day and then delete it. Once people know where stuff is, they don't need it anymore. Deleting them makes the place tidier and rids the stigma of over-moderation.

As another suggestion, maybe there should be an area that's just under General but a little more light-hearted and for topics including RR's (such as the Bentley one) but where there's more banter allowed? Keep the OT section for non-RR stuff? Just a suggestion. Tried it on another large LR forum a few years back and it worked really well. Si. <This is my name.

Stan, you do a great job, and someone has to decide what goes where and what is best to go where.

Moderating a forum is a thankless task ( I know ) but the best forums are the ones that are well managed and controlled because they are organised. We still have issues with multiple threads starting up on the same topic (we are all probably guilty of that) - but maybe this could be resolved with more forums/subforums (e.g. Tyres & Wheels | Gearboxes | Engines etc.). An "Other Vehicles" forum would be very "handy". Forum users "titling" of topics is also an area that could be improved - but that is down to us!

Which forum a topic goes into really doesn't matter as you simply have to click on "New Posts" each time you visit (or the Hours links at the bottom) and you get everything new, or search is your friend. I very rarely browse a forum, just use the searches and quicklinks

It has already been previously indicated that this is intended to be a family friendly forum - I missed the sheep photo , but it would not have gone down well at work (school - ding-a-ling !). There are other forums for that stuff, one can always link out, in code tags if necessary. (Joker has the hang of this ) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

@bellini, with some posts its difficult to know where to move it but i try and remember where previous posts with the same subject are , like tyres for instance , does the post go in technical or maintenance/mods sections...i move them to the maintenance/mods because i've seen the same there...
ok , so i get things wrong sometimes but i try my best..
under 'general' it reads 'discuss anything about the RANGE ROVER here'' so does everything else go in off topic..nice idea re the 'moved' link deletion..

@joe, thankyou for the reassurance, much appreciated.... .could be helpful having particular sections for tyres , gearbox's etc then members would [hopefully] post or get their info there...but would it be to many sections/sub sections ? i dont know ....hopefully i can 'plonk' the OP's post from general into the correct section if/when needed and get it right.. ... - .- -.
