My nuts are swollen

Anyone else had this? Apparently it's a common problem....

The tyre fitters can't get their socket onto the nuts to remove the wheels. New set of nuts needed. Graham

Have they tried using the right socket?

Yes, that's the point. The 22mm won't go on (except by hammering it into place, not ideal). 23mm is too big and the torquing up won't necessarily be correct (slipping etc).

As I don't want my wheels to fall off (had that once as a 17 year old... Embarassed ) I've told 'em to buy some new nuts and we'll have another go. Graham

If the socket isn't pressed fully home right up to the collar of the nut when tightening them it twists the cap and makes it almost impossible to get the socket off and on in the future

Yep had this with two sets of nuts ( oh erh mrs ) it's because it is a stainless steel cap on a mild steel wheel nut and you get rust in between , no cure I'm afraid just replace when you see the swelling . I think I did quite well with only one Frankie Howard there . 2008 MY Supercharged

Seems like a stupid design... infuriatingly unnecessary expense. Graham

I think it's done so they look better for longer.

Still stupid as the mild steel could still polish up nice!! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Same as a P38 issue and on the Discovery 2... s Censored t wheel nuts im affraid...

When you get new ones, spray copper grease in from the back of them and if you want to get excited, then pack the rear of them with CV grease.. Did mine and had no issues in 4+ years...

Right, thanks Thumbs Up Car's 4 years old. Pretty pathetic really.

My 18 year old BMW convertible had a perfect set of nuts. Graham

My local tyre fitter reckons its the air guns that do the damage - rattling the covers off the nuts - he always loosens mine with a wheel brace first.

You can get replacements made of solid stainless steel, I got a set at Billing a while back but they went with the old car.

Did not think I would get away with changing all the wheel nuts over in the dealers forecourt.

I would have insisted they were changed Ian... Bet they are on a mechanics car by now!

Craig

I don't think the car was there long enough for the mechanics to do anything, it went to a local used car dealer and it was in Auto Trader the following day.
