Protective brake disc cover rotted round bolt holes!

Following a journey home with a lot of rattling and banging, which sadly turned out to be me!

It turns out to be the brake disc protective cover, it has rotted around the bolts and come adrift. Now at the mo it's been cable tied as a temporary fix. Is it best to remove it completely . The other option seemed to be involving removing the bolts, does this mean you'd need to remove the axles. I guess all four corners will prob need the same approach sooner or later.

Assorted washers required, works well until the disc guards rot away around them. You may have to remove the discs to get decent access. And yes the only proper solution is to remove hubs to replace them. The other way is to cut through to remove, and then cut new ones and refix (or weld) when in position. .

Thanks Joe , had a nasty feeling that the proper fix could be a complicated one! My brother in law is very handy but isn't a Landrover guy so just wanted some pure Landrover advice , this site never disappoints me

I used "penny" washers to repair mine, simple fix and painted over to stop further rust.

I had the same problem. Didn't bother with the washers, just used tin snips and cut them off, with a view to replacing. Think they worked out about £60 a corner so decided I didn't need them. They are weather shields to stop mud and stones getting onto the disc/pad. As I don't do any mud stuff didn't see the need, and to do a propper job means splitting the hub which it a total PITA! [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Thanks Richci ans Rob .think may go down the removal route . Although I tow a horse box with mine it doesn't involve an awfull lot of offloading . Will look at the washer idea with some protective paint too. My travelling picnic blanket was invaluable for raising the height of my range and lying underneath it!

On the front all you need to remove is the caliper , caliper carier and brake disk and they just bolt on onto no6 Range Rover

Scotland 

If fitting new backplates you need to

1. Remove the hub assembly

or


2. Cut the new backplate and fit then weld up the cut

I'd frightened myself by reading somewhere on the net that the only proper fix involved removing the axles to be able to replace these covers correctly and that sounded pricey!
That's the only trouble with being a lady slightly techie rangie owner, the intention is very much present but sometimes there are big gaps in my knowledge... But if I don't ask I can't learn .
