Standing in Costco right now with three four litre bottles of Castrol Edge in my trolley - and a rack of five litre bottles of Mobil 1 right in front of me. It conforms to BMW's longlife standard, so will it be any use in a TD6? It's the 0W40 turbo diesel specific stuff, rather than the other. Any ideas?

Longlife or fully synthetic to ACEA A3/B3, API SJ/CD, ECII 0W40

For this climate handbook recommends:

5W/30
5W/40 <<<<<

10W/40

fully synthetic .

And I plugged my reg in to Mobil's site... just fine. I'll be changing it every 10k or every year regardless.

Does the oil have to meet all those specs, or just one of them ?

Not an expert with oil specs...........

The oil I use meets ACEA: A3 B4 and API: SM CF, does that mean its no good, according to the API bit ?

Or OK as it meets the ACEA bit ?

ACEA and API are different standards. If it meets or exceeds one of them, then it'll be fine. Most oils are at least API SJ these days. If I'd had the handbook with me I wouldn't have swithered so much - I didn't, so I did.
A 0W40 will be just as fine as a 5W40 in our climate, with the former arguably being better where I live.
I'd be interested to see what the Land Rover standard for the TD6 actually is, but the fact that the Mobil stuff's approved for BMW longlife oil is good enough for me. I'll be servicing it on time and date anyway.

In case you don't know, the car will tell you when it needs an oil change (like most "BMW's")........depending on how its driven. Comes up for a few secs on the instrument cluster when the ignition is turned on.

Pretty sure mine reconned about 16000 miles when I reset the service indicator.

That could be nearly 3 years for me, so mine won't be done to the car either..........

Yeah, I knew that. Our TT and S3 did as well, but I got them changed to time and date. I deal with used oil analysis as part of my job and the tests that are done on that still have a margin of error due to sampling techniques as well as other factors. There was no way I was entrusting my service regime to a crappy wee sensor in the sump. Others' oil sludge problems with their 1.8Ts vindicates my decision! I've not properly read up on how the RR works it out, but I'd rather go with a schedule I've set.

I use truffle oil- its a RR. After all..

Seriously last time I used EDGE 5w40
Due another change soon actual service tho not an interim self done job at 6000.
